Austrian Body Votes Return
Of Property to Former Nazis
VIENNA, (JTA)—An Aus-
trian Parliamentary committee
accepted a measure designed to
return to f o r m e r Nazis
"Aryanized" property which
was taken from them- after the
liberation and given to its for-
mer owners.
The committee approved an
appeal, drafted jointly by the
People's Party and the Social
Democrats, urging the govern-
ment to improve restitution leg-
islation for victims of Nazism.
The committee refused to re-
view sentences passed oh for-
mer Nazis by People's Courts.

dent of Beersheba has learned
that, when you're dealing with
customs officials, it's always
better to quit while you're still
ahead—even if you think you're
behind.
The whole matter came up
when the resident got a gift
from South America—a pack of
cards. The customs duty was

JERUSALEM, (JTA) —Isr a el' s

disease, it was reported in a
study covering causes of death
in 1953 and 1954. The survey
was issued by the Central Statis-
tical Bureau, and covered only
Jewish citizens of Israel. Ade-
quate statistics for other sectors
of the population ' are still un-
available for that time period.
The tuberculosis death rate
which stood at 151 for 1953, was
reduced to 141 in 1954. The in-
cidence of polio was reduced
from 130 to 89 in the same pe-
riod..
The figures for coronary dis-
ease showed that it had been
responsible for 1,240 of a total
of 9,227 deaths in 1953, while
it accounted for 1,380 of a total
of 9,635 the following year.
BERLIN, (JTA) — The Bonn
government has approved, upon
the request of the West Berlin
Senate, the extension to West
Berlin of the law on the recogni-
tion of marriages that were not
solemnized during the Hitler
era because of Nazi racial
policies.
Under the terms of the law,
applications for the retroactive
legitimation of such marital
unions may be filed until Dec.
31, 1957. Even where one of
the partners has died: the mar-
riages can be legit' I retro-
