Germans Willing to Pay
Former Slave Laborers
BONN (JTA) — The I. G.
Farben chemical trust at a
meeting of its board of direc-
tors decided to offer $7,000,000
in settlement of all claims for
former slave laborers—most of
them Jews—employed by the
company at the Monowitz syn-
thetic rubber plant. The offer,
which is expected to be made
to the Conference of Jewish
Material Claims Against Ger-
many, results from the success-
ful suit of Norbert Wollheim,
one-time slave laborer, postwar
leader of German Jewry and
currently a resident of New
York.
Mr. Wollheim sued for back
wages and compensation for
cruelties suffered at the Mono-
witz butane plant where he and
thousands of other Jewish and
non-Jewish inmates of the
Auschwitz concentration - camp
were forced to work. Most of
the slave laborers were either
worked to death or gassed at
the camp when they collapsed
of overwork.
I. G. Farben fought the suit
on the grounds that it was not
responsible for the working con-
ditions or treatment of the
workers who were supplied by
the Nazi authorities and whose
wages were turned over to those
authorities. After its appeal to
a higher court, the case was
suspended and the court sug-
gested that the company seek
to reach a settlement with slave
laborer claimants or their heirs.
Thus far only 2,400 claims

Shalgon, which produces twice
as much ice as its rival, is ac-
cordingly allotted a distributive
area of 6'6 per cent of the town.
But the ice vendors of the rival
firm have been trying to take

In retaliation, the red-hot ice

Burned-Out Truck
to Warn Drivers
JERUSALEM (JTA)—A stern
warning to reckless drivers—in
the form of a burned-out truck
—will mark the spot on the Tel
Aviv-Jerusalem road which has
claimed more lives than any
other.
The steep descent from Kastel
will be marked by the charred
frame of a truck in which two
men lost their lives on June 1.
Fastened above the wreckage
will be a sign carrying the
warning: "This is the result of
reckless driving on this road."
The project, suggested by the
Jerusalem Police Department,
will be financed by the National
Council for the Prevention of
Traffic Accidents.

WASHINGTON— Isra-
el's "dire need" for arms was
restated Tuesday by Ambassa-
dor Abba Eban to Secretary of
State John Foster Dulles during
their first meeting since Mr.
Eban's return from Jerusalem.
Eban also discussed with Dul-
les Israel's application some
time ago for a $75,000,000 loan
from the Export-Import Bank
for water development projects.
In the course of the confer-
ence, the Israel Ambassador
told the Secretary of State of
increased Arab hostility against
the Jewish state. He described
the Jordanian border assaults
and the intensified Arab block-
ade.
He cited the blocking of
Egypt's seizure of a Greek ves-
sel which carried a cargo of
cement for Israel and indicated
that he communicated with the
President of the UN Security
Council on the Suez blockade
issue.
Secretary Dulles gave his own
views to Mr. Eban to -be con-
veyed to the Israel government.

000,000 pounds $(5,000,000), M.
Sieff, chairman of the Anglo-
Israel Chamber of Commerce,
reported to the fifth annual
meeting of the organization.
He expressed hope that the
overall increase in trade be-
tween the two countries regis-
tered last year would continue.
Sieff, who was re-elected
chairman of the association,
scored the British government's
failure to take firm action
against Arab diplomatic mis-
sions which questioned British
firms which dealt with Arab
states whether their directors,
owners or employees were Jew-

He held up as an example the
Dutch government's opposition
