began preparations for the High
Holy Days, which begin this
year on Sept. 5.
Wolok, who is head of the
High Holiday committee, states
that because of space limita-
tions, seats will be available for
members only.
Rabbi Yaakov I. Homnick
will lead the services - and
preach the sermons, and Cantor
David Tanzman will chant the
services.
The seating committee began
accepting memberships this
week and will continue meeting
regularly during the _ summer

Rabbi Homnick will leave
Oak Park this week to begin
studies on a summer fellowship
he was awarded to the Yeshiva
Gohovo, of Lakewood, N.J. The
seminary is directed by Rabbi
Aaron Kottler, former Rosh
Yeshiva of the Kletzker Ye-
shiva.
Sabbath services will be -held
at 8 p.m., today, and at 9 a.m.,
Saturday. Daily services through-
out the summer months will be
at 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.

on 60th Birthday
460 Pupils Attend Yeshivah Camp
Over 150 relatives and friends
gathered last week, to hold a
surprise celebration honoring
the 60th birthday of Sam Ras-
kin. The affair was held at the

Castle Hall,
with guests
coming from
Toledo, N e w
York, Brook-
lyn, New Jer-
sey and Mem-
phis, Tenn.
Raskin is a
Raskin
lifetime member of Detroit
Lodge, K of P, and since join-
ing in 1922 has served as chan-
cellor commander, grand chan-
cellor commander of the State
of Michigan and on various
boards and committees in be-
half of the lodge.
A member of the Masonic
Order and Jewish War Veter-
ans, _Post 135, he is also a past
commander of the Julius Ros-
enwald Post of the American
Legion.
Raskin was recently re-elected
as president of the Old Timer's
Club of the Hannah Schloss
Bldg.
He is the father of two sons,
Dr. Herbert Raskin and Larry
Raskin, and has seven grand-
children. Raskin is president of
the Toledo Steel Pickling Corp.

A record number of children
are participating this summer
in activities of the Yeshivath
Beth Yehudah, according to
Rabbi Joseph Elias, principal.
Nearly 400 students between
6 and 16 attend Hebrew classes
during the morning. Of this
number, 200 take advantage of
a day-long program of camp
activities, including lunch, out-
ings, swimming, sports, arts and
crafts, visits to points of in-
terest and occasional overnight
hikes.
In addition to the older chil-
dren, 63 youngsters, aged 4 to 6
are enrolled in a kindergarten
program, patterned after the
day camp.
A feature of the summer
camp is a boys and girls coun-
selor in training program which
combines theoretical instruction
with practical experience.
A limited number of chil-
dren are being accepted for the
second camp period, beginning

Merkaz Schedules
Membership Meeting
The first general membership
meeting of the Merkaz, follow-
ing election earlier this year of
a new board, will be held at
8:30 p.m., Thursday, at Young
Israel Center, on Dexter.
Discussion will center on
strengthening Orthodox Jewish
life in the city. A number of
new members, who joined the
Merkaz during the membership
drive of the last month, will
participate in the planning for
the coming season.
The Merkaz has prepared a
printed bulletin which will be
issued before the meeting to
inform the Jewish public about
the overall purpose and im-
portance of the organization.
Second Rabbinical Group
Leaves for Soviet Union
NEW YORK, (JTA)—A del-
egation of eight New York rab-
bis departed from Idlewild Air-
port for Russia, Poland and
Czechoslovakia to study religi-
ous conditions in those lands.
The tour is one of a series in
the New York Board of Rabbis'
contact with religions through-
out the world.
This is the second group of
American rabbis to go to the
Soviet Union. The first group,
which is currently in Moscow,
was composed exclusively of
Orthodox Rabbis.

Eli Grad Education Director
Eli Grad, for five years edu-
cational director of Cong. Bnai
Israel, Washington, D.C., will
arrive here in August to be-
come director of education at
Cong. Shaarey Zedek.
Emanu-El Sabbath Services
