`Jewish Spy' Under Stalin Regains
Favor of Russians Posthumously
. NEW YORK, (JTA)—For the
first time since his mysteriouS
death in the Soviet Union in
19.48—when he was accused of
being a "Jewish bourgeous na-
tionalist" and an "agent Of the
American Jewish capitalists"—

Mikhoels
The report, distributed by
the Soviet delegation to the
United Nations, described Milt-_
heels as "the great Jewish ac-
tor."
Apparently aiming to show
that Jewish cultural life has
not altogether been - suppressed
in the Soviet Union, the report,
entitled "Jewish Artists Per-
form in Moscow," says that
Jewish concerts are currently
taking place in the Soviet cap-
ital and in other cities in the
USSR and that they enjoy great
success.
The report deals at length
with Clara Vaga, whom it de-
scribes as a "singer of Jewish
songs with the Latvian State
Philharmonic Soviet of Riga,"
and Max Reznik-Martov, iden-
tified as "a monologist with the
Latvia Philharmonic Society."
It stresses that the latter "is
a graduate of the Moscow The-
atrical School, where he studied
under Mikhoels, and says that
"his style of delivery is reminis-
cent of the great Jewish actor."
The report says that Miss
Vaga sang in MoscoW "to full
audiences" which appreciated
the "ease with which she con:-
veyed the unique flavor of Jew-
ish folk songs."
It also states that the aud-
ience "enjoyed tremendously"
selections from .the works of
Sholem Aleichem read by Rez-
nik-Martov in Yiddish. It as-
serts that Vaga and Reznik-
Martov "give as many as 20
concerts a month."
The "Literaturnaya Gazeta"
which arrived here from Mos-
cow, reports that - Soviet au-
thorities have decided to re-
habilitate Isaac Babel, noted
Soviet Jewish author who
"disappeared" in 1939 and who
was very well known for his
stories in the Russian language
of Jewish life during and after
the Soviet revolution.
The Moscow publication re-
veals that the writers asso-
elation in Moscow has estab-
lished a committee to deal
with Babel's "literary heritage."

LONDON, (JTA)—The An-
glo-Jewish Association will
continue its efforts to arrive
at a form of cooperation with
the Board of Deputies of Brit-
ish Jews, and still hopes to be
able to cooperate on specific
issues with other Jewish groups
on national and international
bases, R. Carvalho, presi-
dent of the AJA, declared here
at the semi-annual general
meeting of the organization.
The AJA is not interested
in prestige, he stressed and it
would do everything possible
to "procure cooperation short
of losing its individuality and
tradition."
There - was still no reason to
despair of unity, he asserted,
and. he would continue to look
for fresh approaches and new
ways of persuading the Board
of Deputies that the AJA
meant what it said and "did
not intend to cut the ground
from under the Board's feet."
U. S. Rabbis Speak
at Russian Services
NEW YORK, (JTA). — A
group of six Soviet rabbis,
headed by Moscow's Chief
Rabbi Solomon Schliffer,
welcomed the delegation of
the Rabbinical Council of
America upon its arrival in
Moscow to study Jewish re-
ligious life there, it was re-
ported here.
The American rabbis con-
ducted sabbath services in
the Moscow synagogue, which
was crowded with worship-
pers, and delivered sermons
in Yiddish assuring the Rus-
sian Jews that the Jews of
the United States are ready
to give them any help neces-
sary for their religious needs.
Ask Armistice Meeting
After 2 Israelis Slain
JERUSALEM, (JTA).— Israel
asked the Israel-Jordan Mixed
Armistice Commission for an
emergency meeting to discuss
Jordanian attacks on Israeli
personnel and property in the
Kfar Saba area. Two Israelis
were killed, one was wounded
and a train and trucks were
brought under fire in the inci-
dents.
Announcing the Israel de-
mand for a meeting, a Foreign
Ministry spokesman noted that
since April 26 when Jordan gave
United Nations Secretary Gen-
eral Dag Hammarskjold its
word to maintain the peace,
Jordan has been condemned
three time for violating the
armistice pact. Four Israelis
have died and six have been
wounded in the attacks and
raids which led to these con-
demnations, the spakesman
added.
A Jordanian royal decree to-
day made it unnecessary for
Jordanians or Syrians to obtain
passports for traveling between
the two countries, except for
Syrian Jews, it was reported to-
day in a Jordan radio broad-
cast monitored here.

"2. To facilitate a settlement,

Israel. The problem of the Arab
refugees should be solved
through joint efforts by Israel
and the Arab countries in co-
operation with the United Na-

"3. Large - scale economic
aid for the development of the
region should be given by the
big powers through the United
Nations. Within the framework
of such a scheme, the Arab and

The resolution asks the Jap-
anese government not to act in
any way counter to the party's
recommendations and demands
that the government "should
strictly prohibit the export of
arms" to the Middle East.
