Applebaum ..••••■••• ;;PL:tn: (Special to the Jewish News) STRATFORD, Ontario—There were scores of Detroiters here on opening nights of the Shake- spearean Festival to witness t h e magnificent staging o f "Henry V" and "The Merry Wives of Windsor." Many of the Michigan people made return trips after having seen the festival productions during the past three years. The sad notes of last year's staging of "The Merchant of Venice" seemed to be forgotten, al- though some referred to it and expressed the hope that such er- rors will not be repeated. Christopher Plummer gave new strength to a Shakes- pearean role in his interpre- tation of the character of Henry V. Lloyd Bochner, Louis Negin, William Shatner, Max Help- mann and Sharon Acker distin- guished themselves in the cur- rent productions. An interesting note, acclaim- ing the Stratford Idea, was struck on .the eve of the Festi- val's beginning, on Sunday eve- ning, when Rabbi Reuben Slonim, of Toronto, declared at the official dedication of the tent for the season, at an inter- faith service, that "Stratford is not just a local flash in the pan, but a national institution repre- senting all the people." He called the Festival "a laboratory of life." Douglas Campbell, star of previous years, was magnifi- cent as "Pistol" and "Falstaff" in the two respective plays. The Festival management is preparing for the additional events,—the music festival un- der the direction of Louis Ap- plebaum, the jazz concert and other attractions.
