Orthodox Rabbis Ask Support of
Clergy, Council for Judaism's Ouster

WASHINGTON, (JTA)—The
Rabbinical Council of America,
an organization of Orthodox
rabbis, concluded its three-day
convention here with a plea to
the Chrittian clergy in the
United States to extend moral•
support to. Israel and with adop-
tion of a resolution calling upon
the entire American Orthodox
rabbinate to take steps to ex-
clude the American Council of
Judaism from Jewish life.
The plea to the Christian
clergy was voiced by Rabbi Sol-
omon Sharfman of New York
following his election as presi-
dent of the Rabbinical Council.
"The shocking conduct of the
American Council of Judaism
and its members in seeking to
question the loyalty of the vast
majority of American Jews who
support Israel and the Council's
open association with the ene-
mies of Israel in the Arab coun-
tries, as well as in the U. S. is
an act of religious treason to our
faith; consequently, they should
be placed outside the houSe of
Israel," the resolution said.
Earlier, the convention was
addressed by Harold Stassen,
special assistant to President

Eisenhower on disarmament. He
stressed the significance of reli-
gion in controlling the atom.
President Eisenhower, in a
message to the convention, said
that he was "confident that the
future endeavors of all of you
will continue contributing much
to the spiritual life of the Amer-
ican people and to the advance-
thent of good citizenship and
human welfare."
Rabbi. Bernard Bergman,
convention chairman, address-
ing the session urged President
Eisenhower to use his influence
at the United Nations to bring
about Arab-Israel peace.
- Rabbi Irving Miller, chairman
of the American Zionist Coun-
cil, said: "To a world struggling
to find the path to peaceful co-
existence a new blow has been
dealt by the Arab governments,
in their refusal to even discuss
the American-supported resolu- ,
tion at the United Nations call-
ing on UN Secretary General
Dag Hammarskjold to continue
and intensify his efforts to re-_
duce tensions in the Middle East.
