Suburb's 'Building Rabbi'

Moves on to Post in Chicago
By the Oak .-Woodser
On Nov. 9, 1938, a rabbi in
Mannheim, Germany, stood
helplessly by while his syna-
gogue was burned to the ground
by Hitler's heavy-booted hordes.
At the time, the rabbi was
uncertain of his own fate, as
mrere all Jews in those days.
Yet, Dr. Frank F. Rosenthal
made himself
7.-
a promise: No
more destruc-
tion, from now
on only con-
struction.
Rabbi Rosen-
thal made good
that vow, initi-
ally at W i n-
ston - Salem,
N. C., his first
pulpit in Amer-
ica, then at
Jackson, Mich.,
and now at
'Cong. Emanu-
El which ex-
pects to use its Dr. Rosenthal
new building this fall for - High
Holiday services.
But, the "building rabbi" is
moving on. He leaves toward
the end of this month to pre-
pare for assuming the spiritual
leadership of another congre-
gation — Temple Anshe Shal-
om, in Chicago Heights, Ill.
In his new minstry, Rabbi'
Rosenthal again will be faced
with the task of building—a jab
he has come to love and per-
form with zeal.
With the growth of the Chi-
cago suburban areas, Temple
Anshe Sholom has been out-
stripping the facilities originally
constructed.
Built in 1949, the congrega-
tion is too small to accommo-
date the 400 families it antici-
pates by the end of the year,
and already has purchased a
10-acre site at nearby Floss-
more.
As a farewell to Dr:Rosen-
thal; a testimonial reception
will be tendered to him by
.the. South . Oakland . County
Committee of the Jewish
Community Council at 8:30

Participating in the program
will be Rabbi Yaakov I. Horn-
nick, of the host congregation;
Ben Weil, chairman of the
Council's SOC Committee; Rab-
bi Mordecai S. Halpern, of
Cong. Beth Shalom. Dr. Leon
Fram, of Temple Israel; Rev.
Jesse DeWitt, of Faith Metho-
dist Church; Dr. S. Joseph Fau-
man, of the Council; and Jack
Bodzin, of the SOC Committee.
Rabbi Rosenthal will receive
a scroll recognizing his partici-
pation in communal and inter-
community affairs during his
foUr-year tenure as spiritual
head of Emanu-El. He also will
respond to the greetings.
During his tenure at Emanu-
El, Rabbi Rosenthal saw the
membership rise from 58 to 425
member-families, and the re-
ligious school grow frorn noth-
ing to 600 children. This year
saw the first high school gradu-
ation in the congregation's short
history.
Among the work he has per-
formed outside his congregation
have been efforts for the SOC
Community Service, Royal Oak
Pastor's Ass'n., and Rotary Club.
His ministry was closely as-
sociated with Christian congre-
gations, especially with the First
Met ho d i s t Church, which
Emanu-El used for High Holi-
day services in the past. He
founded the idea of a Brother-
hood Service in the suburbs as
a sign of recognition and ap-
preciation.
While he still was a rabbi
in Jackson, he became visiting
professor of religion at nearby
Albion College, a Methodist de-
nominational school.
He continued in that posi-
tion during his tenure year,
and saw his work come to
fruition last Passover when
he conducted a seder for 400
non-Jewish students.
Rabbi Rosenthal also was a
member of the faculty of the
Michigan Methodist Pastor's
School where he gave instruc-
tion on the Hebrew Prophets to
over 300 Methodist Ministers.
Another job he will continue
to perform, even after his de-
parture for Illinois, is the chair-
manship of foreign . contacts
committee of the Central Con-
ference of American Rabbis, in
which capacity he has main-
tained contact with all Liberal
Jewish congregations through-
out the world.
