IN HIS BOOK, "Strictly For
Laughs," comic Joey Adams
tells about so much activity
going on in Israel that if you
stand still for five minutes, they
build something around you .. .
"I was inspecting a radio station
in Jerusalem and they built a
whole network around me. Just
before I was introduced on the
air, the announcer made the
station break and gave the time,
`When you hear the chimes, it
will be exactly five o'clock—or
a few minutes later!' "
JOEY'S WIFE, CINDY, tells
him that charity begins at home,
he says, "but home to show peo-
ple is in every city in America.
_I have visited every nook and
corner in these United States to
help raise funds for the March
of Dimes, Muscular Dystrophy,
United Jewish Appeal, Cancer,
Heart, Cerebral Palsy, National
Conference of Christians and
Jews, Israel Bonds, Salvation
Army and the Red Cross. I even
raised money for a pool table
for a group of characters in the
Bronx."
IN DETROIT, JOEY likes to
visit with Shirley Eder and her
"Hygrade" husband, Eddie, and
also gives out with stories he
says are told by Sidney Allen
and Nate Shapero . .. "At the
London Chop House I joined
Les Gruber and my pal Leonard
Simons, the advertising man, for
a midnight snack and some
early-morning jokes . . 'We
have a man here in Detroit,'
said Leonard, 'who has such
bad eyesight that he has special
glasses just to find his glasses.
His lenses are so thick, they
look like milk-bottle bottoms;
but he's so rich he has three
seeing-eye humans. When he
left here one night, they pointed
him towards his car. He got in
and sat down on his fur up-
holstery—which turned out to
be his wife. He removed his
chauffeur and his glasses and
gingerly drove away. 'How can
you drive without glasses?' I
exclaimed from the rear of the
car. 'Easy,' said the rich one,
pointing straight ahead. 'Pre-
scription windshields!"
