ests in the Near East, the Amer-

lished a 26-page faCt sheet, "The
Middle East Ferment."
"Beneath the present ferment
in the Middle East lie forces
more deep - seated than the
Arab-Israel conflict," the ex-
tensively documented publica-
tion cautions. It points out that
an appraisal of the situation
must take into account at least
four elements beside the Arab-
Israel conflict:

1. Long-ingrained hostility to
the former colonial powers of
Western Europe.

Arab League states.
3. Soviet penetration and prov-
ocation.

The AJC fact sheet states that
"although U.S. policy has been
aimed consistently at preserving
peace, recent actions have failed
to put necessary teeth in this
policy."
The -AJC document states that
a firm U.S. stand should insure:

1. No change in the status quo
by either side through force of
arms.
2. Cessation of any and every
aggressive act on the part of any
nation.
3. Economic and technical aid
to all 'the people of the Middle
East, to help overcome poverty,
disease, illiteracy.
4. Sale of defensive arms to
Israel, so that she may protect
herself against the .threat of ag-
gression.

Belgian Diamond Dealers
Protest Arab Boycott

BRUSSELS, (JTA)—The Bel-
gian government has promised
to take into consideration a pro-
test against its Ministry of
Overseas Trade circulating
among diamond dealers a Saudi
Arabian statement to the effect
that all diamonds sold to the
Arab country would have to be
accompanied by a certificate
that the seller was not a Jew.
This pledge was made by the
Minister for Overseas Trade
after M. Marinower, a member
of the World Jewish Congress
executive, had formally pro-
tested circularization of the
Saudi Arabian statement by the
Ministry. When the matter was
brought to - the attention • of A,
Rotti, president of the Belgian
Diamond Dealers Federation, he
immediately sent a letter of pro-
test to the Ministry, swelling
the already • large chorus of
protests.

Rabbi
Waxman

Traveling long distances
through sleet and hailstorm, by
air, train and bus, 21 Conser-
vative rabbis devoted time and
energy during the winter
months to carry the story of
Conservative Judaism to 24 con-
gregations in seven states across
the country.
These "Cavalcades of Con-
servative Judaism," organized
by the National Academy for
Adult Jewish Studies of the
United Synagogue of America,
meet the growing interest on
the part of its rank-and-file
members for information on the
basic tenets of Conservative
Judaism, its history, -philosphy
and religious practices.
Rabbi Simon Noveck, direc-
tor of the Academy, and Rabbi
Mordecai Waxman, of Temple
Israel, Great Neck, N. Y., co-
ordinated the project - for the
United Synagogue, the national
association of 600 Conservative
congregations.
In each of six regions a team
of three rabbis followed One
another at monthly intervals,
moving from city to city
in rapid succession, and ad-
dressing a series of four con-
gregations. • The total of the
three lectures heard by any
one congregation comprised an
integrated course on Conserva
tive Judaism.
Among the visiting spiritual
leaders was Rabbi Myer Kripke,
of Omaha, Neb., who toured
Michigan, where he outlined the
history of the Conservative
movement before congregations
in Grand Rapids, Flint, Kala-
mazoo and Bay City. His team-
mates at later meetings were
Rabbis . Abraham Karp, of
Kansas City, and S. Gershon
Levi, of Jamaica, N. Y.

Becomes Chaplain
`to Repay a Debt'

NEW YORK, N.Y.—Abraham
David Feffer, of Drobin, Poland,
one of 29 young men ordained
as rabbis on June 3, at the
commencement of the Jewish
Theological Seminary of Am-
erica, is the first concentration
camp survivor to have been
educated for the rabbinate in
this country and to enter the

army chaplaincy.
In his own words, Rabbi
Feffer is entering the chap-
laincy "to repay a debt for
my life." Rabbi Feffer arrived
on the Marine Perch, second
refugee ship to arrive in this
country.
In 1942, at 14, after three
years in ghettos, Rabbi Feffer
was --put into Auschwitz where
all of his immediate family
were killed. He was moved to
Dachau in January, 1945, and
as the liberating allies neared
the camp, it was evacuated and
all inmates were sent on a

forced march toward exter-
mination.
Rabbi Feffer was rescued by
the American Army from a pile

of dead bodies in closed cattle
cars. He was brought back to
health, and learned English
from GIs who spoke Yiddish
and Polish, while working for
the army 11 months.
