ZOD Open Meeting, June 18

Dr. Emanuel Neumann, who
will deliver a major address in
Detroit on June 18, has partici-

activities of the era leading up
to the establishment of Israel,
His talk will be delivered at
8:30 p.m., in the Esther Berman
Bldg., Schaefer and 7 Mile Rd.,
and is under the auspices of the
Zionist Organization of Detroit,
A prominent figure in Ameri-
can and world Zionist circles
for many years, Dr. Neumann is
a past president of ZOA and the
Jewish National Fund. He is the
organizer of the Palestine Foun-
dation Fund, United Palestine
Appeal and the America_n Pales-
tine Committee.
Presently, he is a leading
member of the Jewish Agency
Executive, the World Zionist
Executive and is chairman of
the national executive commit-
tee of ZOA.
Among the long list of politi-
cal negotiations he has carried
out in his career were those
with King Abdullah, ruler of
Transjordan, in 1933, regarding
Jewish colonization in that
country.
Daring World War IT, Dr,
Neumann's efforts in political
affairs in Washington led to
passage of the Palestine Resolu-
tion by both houses of Congress.
He also presented the Jewish
case before the Anglo-Ameri-
can Committee of Inquiry in
1945. He followed these negotia-
tions in 1947 when he repre-
sented the Jewish Agency with
Foreign Minister Bevin,
One of his leading contribu-
tions to the Jewish cause was
in the fall of 1947 when, as a
member of the Jewish delega-
tion to the United Nations at
Lake Success, he presented the
Jewish position before the UN.
He negotiated with many gov-
ernments to help bring about
the November resolution on the
partition of Palestine. -
Dr. Neumann also has been
closely connected with the Jor-
dan Valley Authority project,
In its initial stages, he organized
and headed the Commission on
Palestine Surveys which brought
together a group of American
experts to work out engineering
plans for hydro-electric and
power developments in • Pales-
tine. The report of this commit-
tee forms the basis of the pres-
ent engineering Program of the
Israel government,
In 1955, Dr. Neumann helped
found the Herzl Institute, which
is dedicated to the promotion of
Zionist culture. He is now chair-
- man of the Institute, and is
chairman of the editorial board
of Midstreatn, a new Zionist
quarterly. •
He was born in Libau, Latvia,
in 1896, and holds degrees from
Columbia and New York Uni-
versities. He now divides his
time between work in the U. S.
and Israel, and recently re-
turned from the 24th World
Zionist Congress in Jerusalem.
Rabbi Moses Lehrman, ZOD
president and Morris M. Ja-
cobs, chairman of the program
committee, have invited the
public to hear Dr, Neumann's
address.

party in an attempt to stem
internal differences and to
otherwise strengthen the Labor
movement, is expected to be
taken this week by a special
committee -of nine top party
leaders who, under the chair-
manship of Premier David Ben

Gurion, have been studying the
problem,
The decision on who should
be the new secretary general

of the party seems to be swing-
ing away from Foreign Minis-

ter Moshe Sharett, who was
first believed to be the best
choice, The prevailing opinion
is that changing the country . _
For`'-n Minister at this stage
wo be costly from a political
point. of view. Reports have
either Labor Minister Golda
Myerson or Finance Minister
Levi Eshkol as likely candi-
dates for the top party posts.
Mr. Sharrett is keeping aloof
from the discussions and is
pictured as prepared to take
whatever assignment the party
gives him.
Pressure for - a change in
party leadership stems largely
from the widespread belief that
present party leadership seems
unable to cope with a variety
of pressing domestic issues. Of
these issues, the one generally
considered to be most critical
relates to the question of the
nation's economy.
This issue takes on sharper
focus with the forecast of a
sharp rise in unemployment with
the end of the citrus season and

the same time, the inflationary
trend in the economy has con-
tinued unchecked. Currency in
circulation has risen by ten per
cent within the past 90 days.
The apparent slowdown of
the drive to 'draft Mr. Sharett
for the party post brought to
the fore the possibility of Mrs.
Myerson's selection. One of the
principal reasons advanced for
her selection is that a switch in
labor ministers would be far
less confusing to both world
and domestic opinion at the
present critical stage of events.

.

Our business 'is pleasing Dad with wearables all
year 'round. That's why any gift for him chosen
here is sure to be right!

Should Mrs. Myerson take the
post, it is generally thOught
here that her Cabinet position
would go to Mordecai Namir,
now general secretary of the
Histadrut, the Israel Federation
of Labor. Speculation on Mr.
Namir's replacement in that
key job centered' on Pinhas
Lavon, one-time Minister of
Defense in the Cabinet which
Mr. Sharrett headed, following
Mr. Ben Gurion's first retire-
ment' from Israel's top political
assignment,
