Committee Charges American Policy
with Four-Point Near East Liability
A1
NEW YORK, (JTA)
though United States policy has' .
ben aimed at preserving peace
Ln the Middle East, recent ac-
tions have failed tp put the
"necessary teeth" into this pol-
icy, the American Jewish- Com-
mittee charged.
In a statement, the AJC but-
tressed its charge by citing the
following: •
"1. Our fear of starting an
arms race in the Middle East has
tipped the balance of power
among the nations in that area
and increased the likelihood of
war; 2. Our failure to remember
Arab alignments in the past has
caused us to woo questionable
`allies.'; 3. We have succumbed
to a series of brazen assaults- on
the rights of American citizens
and American business inter-
ests."
The AJC demanded a firm
U. S. stand to insure: 1.. No
change in the status quo by Is-

rael or the Argo countries
through force of arms; 2. Ces-
sation of any and every aggres-
siVe act on the part of any na-
tion in the Middle East; 3. Ec-
onomic and technical aid to all
the people of the Middle East,
to help overcome poverty, dis-
ease, illiteracy and other social
ills which have plagued the
peoples of this area for cen-
turies; 4. Sale of defensive arms
to Israel, so that she may pro-
tect herself against the threat
of aggression.
"Decisive action now from the
Western powers is essential if
war between the Arab coun-
tries and Israel is to be averted
in the coming months," the
American J e w i s h Committee
urged. It also charged that "the
activities of some Arab repre-
sentatives in the United States
have come to bear ominous re-
semblance to the Nazi cam-
paign" in the pre-Pearl Harbor
years.
Citing some of the anti-Semit-
ic literature from Arab sources
circulated in the United States,
the AJC asserted: "The Arab-
Israel controversy in the U.S.A.
has been pushed beyond the
bounds of honest argumentation
into the danger zone of dema-
goguery and incitement to reli-
gious hatred."
Joyful Weddings Turn to Tragedy in Israd 'Incident
By a Special Correspondent
JERUSALEM — Four wed-
dings in one day in the tiny
village of Nahal Oz, along the
Gaza Strip, was a big event,
and from every corner of Israel
parents and friends of the par-
ticipants were gathering to par-
ticipate in the festive occasion.
When the guests arrived,
however, the smiles of antici-
pation froze on their faces. At
6 a.m., a kibbutz member on
guard duty had gone to the
frontier to drive off a group
of infiltrators who were try-
ing to harvest, the crops of
Nahal Oz.
He was dragged from his
horse, and, after a struggle
pulled across the 'border. The
long wait ended that afternoon,
when the broken body of 20-
year-old Roy Rothberg was

Italy Plans Census
on Number of Jews
ROME (JTA)—The fifth con-
gress of the Union of Italian
Jewish Communities called for
a census among Italy's Jews to
establish their exact number as
well as other information con-
cerning them. Current esti-
mates place them at 30,000.
In a series of resolutions, the
congress stressed the import-
ance of creating new Jewish
schools and publishing text-
books for them, urged the in-
clusion of women in the coun-
cils of the institutions of Ital-
ian Jewry and elected a new
Council of the Union composed
of three rabbis, 14 laymen and
one woman, Tullia Zevia.
Chief Rabbi Elio Toaff
warned the delegates of the
danger of assimilation in Italy
due to ignorance of Jewish
traditions, indifference to- them
and to the fact that many ac-
tive Jews 'had left for Israel.
der through UN intervention.
That same day, one soldier
was killed and two wounded
along the Ga-ta Strip, and in the
first week after Dag Hammar-
skjold's cease-fire agreements
with Lebanon, Syria and Jor-
dan, there were 12 other inci-
dents along Israel's borders.
Israelis firmly believe that
even if the cease-fire agree-
ments were scrupulously ob-
served by the Arabs, the truces
would not end the tension. The
threat of war, they say, still
hangs over Israel's head.
Therefore, three days after
announcement of the cease-fire
and the departure of Hammar-
skjold from the Middle East,
volunteers from Israel's cities
went out to 25 border settle-
ments to build fortifications.
The Israel government con-
tinues to increase its taxes, and
more border settlements con-
tinue to be established to help
plug holes in the expanded
border.
