Israel's Most Famous Farmer Here for UJA NEW YORK (JTA) — Uri Marinov, a 28-year-old farmer- guardsman from the Israel bor- der settlement of Nahal Oz facing the tense Gaza strip, ar- rived in New York via El Al Israel Airlines to help the United Jewish Appeal launch the second half of its 1956 nationwide campaign. Rabbi Herbert A. Friedman, UJA executive vice-chairman, announced that the youth will make his first major public appearance at a National Action Conference of the Appeal to be held at the Roosevelt Hotel here June 9 and 10. Uri will tell tne U.:1A cam- paign• leaders what life has been like on Israel's border before and since the recent cease-fire agreement negotiated by United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskj old. The conference will mark the mid-year point of the UJA's 1956 campaign and will set plans for the second half of the drive. Two Concerts Here Highlight Past Week with Jewish Music By ELIZABETH WALDMAN. Highlighting the past week in the community were two notable musical events — the Center Symphony Concert with Mischa Mischakoff, soloist, and the Workmen's Circle and Hal- evy-Farband choral concert. Mischa Mischakoff, concert- master of the Detroit Sym- phony Orchestra, achieved a lyric quality and purity of tone in Beethoven's Violin Concerto, that marks him as a first-rank- ing soloist. The fluidity of his technique was marred only oc- casionally in the softer piano passages in which he tended to lose clarity. In closing the current sea- son, the orchestra, under the direction of Julius Chajes per- formed Mendelssohn's "Italian Symphony" with a complete musical maturity and mastery of the score. Hugo Kauder's Little Suite No. 2 for strings completed the program. We look forward to the Cen- ter Symphony's next season with the hope that they will perform as expertly as they Detroit's Largest have this year. * * * NEW • The Workmen's Circle and Supper Club Halevy-Farband choral concert at the Detroit Institute of Arts Auditorium was a delightful evening of Jewish and Hebrew songs performed by an 80 voice chorus under the able direction 14865 WYOMING of Don Frohman. They're just poor souls who are weak and nobody really took time to un- derstand their weaknesses.". . . This was Joe's philosophy un- til he passed away last week. .. He never stopped trying to help others, and in his own humble and quiet way, made it a part of his everyday life. As Rabbi Samuel Prero . . puts it, Joe measured his days by the good deeds he had done. . He was never too busy to listen to the problems of others and try to help if he could. . . . Although he was always hur- rying and scurrying about without a moment's thought of himself, Joe was never too busy to see that his 85-year-old mother was being taken care of. . . . His warmth of heart to family and friends was an outstanding virtue, and the Jewish community of Detroit won't forget for a long time the kindness of a man whose greatness was never realized until God sent for him. . .
