Drought Veterans Become
Flood Experts in Suburbia

By the Oak-Woodser
Last summer when the tem-
peratures hit 90 degrees for a
record number of days, resi-
dents of South Oakland County
felt the pinch' of a water short-
age, which had grown since the
rapid. rise of the community.
This_ year, • as' Detroit has
opened new pumping stations,
communities out this way have
started to make water reser-
voirs to alleviate the drought
situation.
During the past two weeks,
however, t h e communities
draught veterans turned into
flood ' veterans, as freakish
• and nearly-constant rain for
two weeks turned yirds into
swamp lands, streets into
lakes and basements into
stagnant pools.
Residents who still are able
to joke about water which
backed up from sewers twice
within 10 days have been saying
they probably won't have to
water their grounds all summer
now.

Wine & Beer to Take 0,!t,

Onions gave way to orchids
when residents learned how the
city of Oak Park is feverishly
working to combat the sewer
problem.
With the much - publicized
Twelve-Town Drain, which is
expected to alleviate the prob-
lem entirely, still two years
off, officials from the City En-
gineer's office and the Depart-
ment of Public Works have
been doing their all to figure
out how to stem the tide.
Much of the problem stems
from water flowing into Oak
Park_ from SoUthfield Town-
ship, as the latter area has be-
gun to build up.
The area most seriously hurt
was around Greenfield, between
101/2 and 11 Mile Rds. Here,
dikes have been erected to keep
back the water.
Such was its force during the
last downpour, however, that
one of the dikes gave way. For
several d a y s, city officers
worked to prevent such an oc-
currence again.
In other areas where there
was only a few inches of wa-
ter that entered into the base-
ments, regular sewer covers
are being replaced with re-
strictive covers, which keeps
a good deal of the :water on
the street, while allowing it
to drain first from the houses.
All these measures may not
work in the event of another
storm or prolonged heavy rains,
but it's reassuring to know that
the city is trying its all to come
up with a solution.
And one of these days soon,
we suspect, talk about the great
floods of 1956 will be relegated
to the "Do you remember
when':..'" of casual conversa-
tion..

Emanu-El Services

will follow.
