A 21-month-old child was the
only survivor of a family of
four whose car crashed into a
concrete railroad abutment
early Tuseday morning on Ann
Arbor Trail, near Lilly Rd.
Killed immediately were
Frank A. Kaplan, 36, his wife,
Ann, and their eight-month-old
son, Leslie.
The sole survivor was little
Sheila Kaplan, who was thrown
100 feet from the car. She was
token to Wayne County General
Hospital where she was report-
ed in serious condition. She has
been transferred to Sinai Hos-
pital.
Funeral services for the fam-
ily were held Wednesday, at
the Hebrew Memorial Chapel,
with interment in Hebrew Me-
morial Park Cemetery.
Wayne County Sheriff's offi-
cers who arrived at the scene
soon after the accident, which
was reported at 4:43 a.m., said
that Mr. Kaplan had been driv-
ing east on Ann Arbor Rd., to-
ward Detroit, when he appar-
ently fell asleep at the wheel.
None . of Mr. Kaplan's family
knew that . he had planned_ a
trip. His associates at .the Mer-
chandise Mart where he was a
salesman, also were unaware of
any such plans,, although he s had
been on vacation .since the prev-
ious Friday.
Besides Sheila, Mrs. Kaplan
is survived by her father, 'Hy-
man Kabak; a brother, Seymour,
of Detroit, and another brother.
Mr. Kaplan, a veteran of
World War II and a member
of the Jewish War Veterans,
leaves his mother, Mrs. May
Kaplan and two brothers, Dr.
Alex Kaplan and Harry Kay.
