Shevuot Ushers in Festive Season
Of Graduation, Confirmation Exercises

TEMPLE ISRAEL: At 8:30 p.m. services today, Dr. Leon Fram
will speak on "I Would Rather Be a Servant in the House
of God...", the last' words of Sen. Alben Barkley. The Bas
Mitzvah of loan Lynn Danto will be observed.

The festival of Shevuot, cele-
brating the revelation of the
Ten Commandments to Moses,
will begin in our synagogues at
sundown Tuesday and continue
on Wednesday and Thursday.
Traditionally a time for re-
• flection on Jewish law, Shevuot
has come to be the season of
graduations from our religious
schools and confirmation serv-
ices from Reform synagogues.
Listed below are some of the
events planned for this season:
Cong. Beth Abraham
Cantor Shabtai Ackerman,
Chief Cantor of the Great Syna-
gogue in Tel Aviv, arrived in
Detroit today to become the per-
manent cantor of Beth Abra-
ham Synagogue.
He will be heard for the
first time at Shevuot services
of the congregation at 7 p.m.,
Tuesday, Wednesday a n d
Thursday, and at 8:45 a.m.,
Wednesday and Thursday.
Cantor Acker man will be as-
sisted by the Talisman Quartet,
under the direction of Harry
Siegel. Rabbi Israel I. Halpern
will conduct the services and

preach the sermons.
Adas Shalom Synagogue
Shevuot services will be held
at 6 p.m., Tuesday and Wednes-
day, and at 8:30 a.m., Wednes-
day and

Eighth grade graduation ex-
ercises will be. o b se r v e d at
Wednesday morning services of
the religious school. The 37 girls
who will graduate will offer a
cantata, "The Lights of Faith,"
directed by Gertrude Strauss
and Bernard Fanush, principal.
At 'Yizkor services on Thurs-
day, Rabbi Gorrelick will speak
on "Eternal Life."

Northwest Israel Plans
Fourth Annual Banquet

The Northwest Israel Sister-
hood will celebrate "Sisterhood
Sabbath" tomorrow to commem-
orate the 34th anniversary of
the founding of the Woman's
Branch of the Union of Ortho-
dox Jewish, Congregations of
America.
Rabbi Leo Y. Goldman will
devote his sermon to the occa-
sion and Mrs. Sol Wainer, Sis-
terhood president; Mrs. R. Kar
and Mrs. Al Schwartz will be
in charge of the kiddush follow-
ing morning services.
As a member of the Women's
Branch of the Union of Ortho-
dox Congregations, the North-
west Israel Sisterhood takes
part in its program of aiding
religious groups in Israel, as-
sisting Orthodox servicemen in
the U.' S. and maintaining an
interest in Kosher foods.

The traditional Night of
Learning will be held at 10
p.m., Wednesday, in the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Roberg,
4301 Sturtevant. Rabbi Litke
will, lead the discussion.
Cong. Shaarey Zedek
Shevuot services, at which
Rabbi Morris Adler and Rabbi
Milton Arm will officiate, will
be held at .6 p.m., Tuesday and
Wednesday, and at 8:45 .a.m.,
Wednesday and Thursday.
Rabbi Adler will give the Yiz-
kor sermon.
Cong. Bnai Moshe
Shevuot will be ushered in
with services at 7:40 p.m., Tues-
day. Morning services will be
held at 9 a.m., Wednesday, and
at 8:30 a.m., Thursday, at Yiz-
kor services.
Rabbi M o s e s 'Lehrman will
preach the sermons on "The
Graven Image" and "Mari and

Destiny." Cantor David Katz-
man will chant the services.
Northwest Israel Synagogue
Shevuot services will be held
at 7:30 -p.m. and 9 a.m., on all
days. Rabbi Leo Y. Goldman
has chosen "Torah Today" for
Wednesday's sermon topic, and
"The Joyous Life" for his Yiz-
kor sermon.
