Many Variations in Thought on
The Actual Or i g i n of Shevuot
By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX
The festival of Shevuot is
known as the birthday of King
David as well as the anniversary
of his death. Whenever pos-
sible, Jews ascend Mount Zion
and visit King David's tomb on
this day as a sign of respect for
his memory and for the great
role he played in the history of
our people. It is customary to
recite the Psalms of David when
visiting his tomb. .
Why is the Book of Ruth read
ift the Synagogue on the Shev-
itot festival? Some claim it is
because the turn of events takes
place in the Book of Ruth as
Naomi and Ruth came to Beth-
lehem in the beginning of the
barley harvest (Ruth 1:22) in
the season of Shevuot.
Others claim that the Book of
Ruth is read on the festival of
Shevuot because it is the fes-
tival which commemorates the
Revelation of the Torah at
Sinai. The Torah comes to us
with suffering just as faith and
justification came to Ruth
through her suffering and pati-
ence. Some claim that this book
is read on Shevuot to make us
remember that before we re-
ceived the Torah at Sinai we
were as Ruth the proselyte and
thus must keep the door open
to other proselytes who would
wish to enter the faith of Israel.
Others connect the reading of
the Book of Ruth with the birth-
'day of King David, which - is
said to be on Shevuot, since it
appears' from the end of the
book of Ruth that she was the
grandmother of the great King
David.
Shevuot takes place on the
50th day after the first day of
the Passover. The days between
these two dates are counted
ceremoniously in the synagogue
every evening. Thus it came to
be called by the• Greek name
°Pentecost" which _means that
is the "fiftieth" from the first
day of Passover.
Shevuot is known as "Chag
Habikkurim." It was on Shevuot
that the first fruits of the har-
