A Plea for Fair Mindedness in Middle East Fact Searching
-
-
The Christian Science Monitor, one of the very great Amer-
ican newspapers, in the main has followe-d a fair and consistently
realistic policy in its treatment of the Middle Eastern situation.
It has criticized Israel on occasions and often has made appeals
in behalf of the Arab states and the Arab refugees. - But it has
never failed to point out that Israel is a reality and that its
right to exist. should be acknowledged by all concerned.
In its issue cif_ April 20, in which it discussed the mission
of United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold, the
Monitor pointed out that first in the process of the settlement
of the basic issues "must come a recognition by the Arab states
that, whatever may be the rights and -wrongs of events back to
and before the Balfour Declaration of 1917, the Republic of
Israel is an established institution in present-day Palestine."
In another editorial, on April 17, under the title "For a
Policy in Palestine," the Monitor - stated editorially that "the
administration in Washington should be making it clear to the
world, to Americans, and to the Soviet Union that the United
States must and will stand by the Republic of Israel as against
any attempt to destroy it. We believe thiS would support rather
than injure the Hammarskjold mission."
But Israel's antagonists, those whb seek -to destroy the Jew-
ish State, the groups that are out to harm the small nation that
is fighting for its very existence, unfortunately manage to get
a -hearing in the Monitor's columns. Arab propagandists, the
small group of Jewish anti-Israelis (the Council for Judaism)
and the handful of Americans_ who are bent • upon hindering
peace efforts in the Middle East, have managed to get too-ready
a hearing in the Monitor's news columns. One of the Monitor
writers, Mary Hornaday, on several occasions has given a plat-
form to the obstructionists. - -
The latest attack on Israel's position, in a Mary Hornaday
article, gives a platform to a man who has been repudiated by
the Israelis. Elmo H. Hutchison, retired U. S. Navy commander,
who played so partisan a Tole as chief of the Israel-Jordan Mixed
Armistice Commission, that the Israelis found it necessary to
refuse to serve with -him after he had rendered biased decisions,
now presents his viewpoints on the issue of the Middle East's
peace needs. Miss Hornaday informs us that Hutchison soon will
publish a book, "Violent Truce," on the subject. She presents his
program as follows:
1. A return to the 1947 partition plan (which the Arabs
themselves had repudiated and- which now, no longer is con-
sidered valid in UN circles); 2. `;recognition of the right of two-
thirds of the Palestine refugees to return to Israel" (another
repudiated proposal, since it would mean the injection of a de-
structive fifth column into the already hard-up Israeli state) and
3. the internationalization of the Jerusalem-Bethlehem area.
How unfortunate, that , a program that is so definitely anti-
Israel, stemming from Arab sources; a plan that has been re-
peated time and time and time again,. should be given notoriety!
Meanwhile, the truth about the Arab refugees, who are kept
in concentration camps by their own kinsmen-4 pawns in the
fight on Israel, is kept a dark secret, even though the facts are
so well known: that the Arabs' own chieftains induced them to
leave Israel in the expectation of their return to drive Israelis
into the sea and to acquire all their possessions.
We call these facts - to the Monitor's attention not out of a
desire to criticize, but rather in the hope that a Mary Hornaday
or some one else on the Monitor staff; and others on the staffs
of other newspapers that are managed by fair-minded people,
will seek the truth about the refugees and other issues involved
in the Palestinian issue, and will present them truthfully.

More Provocations

More Distortions
Many provocations are aggravating the Middle Eastern situa-
tion. It is only too evident that outside forces are attempting to
create panic in that area by giving the impression that 250,000
refugees from the Gaza strip will march upon Israel.
Three years ago, Motivated by wishful thinking, similar
threatening reports emanated from several Arab ,capitals. At that
time. Israel was threatened with marches upon her from several
areas. If that had materialized, it would have meant a converging
Of several threatening forces upon the Jewish State. It did not
materialize. It was a fake report—and we believe that the latest
report also was a fake trial balloon.
The mere fact that such trial balloons are being broadcast is
an indication of sad enmities in quarters that should act more
impartially. Perhaps a desire to create news is responsible for
such shocking stories.
What will Israel do in the event there is such a march upon
her border settlements, villages and cities? What would YOU do
if there were a march upon YOUR home? You'd protect it,
wouldn't you? That's how Israel will react whenever her peo-
ple and her homes are threatened.
Soviet 'Gestures' and Intentions
Soviet Russia has offered to cooperate in the freezing of
shipment of arms to the Middle East. What a noble act, now that
the Communists have flooded the anti-Israel sections with Com-
munist arms! This is one of the clever anti-Jewish moves: to
perpetuate imbalance in the possession of defense Materials and
thereby to keep Israel unprotected.
When asked, therefore, how far we can go in placing trust
in the Russian diplomatic word of honor, we reply skeptically.
In a recent report from Cairo, Joseph Alsop stated "there are
good reasons to, suspect that a sort of political H-bomb is con-
cealed in Moscow's pious declaration of support for a United Na-
tions' solution of the Arab-Israeli conflict." He added: "In brief,
it looks as though the Kremlin were about to come out, flat-
footed, for the internationalization of Jerusalem, for a return to
the much narrower frontiers for Israel originally proposed by the
United Nations, and in general for a forcible reimposition of the
first United Nations settlement of the Palestine probleth that
was abrogated by the Israeli victory on the battlefield."
The entire three-point program is an Arab-concocted scheme
to destroy Israel. The anti-Israelis—Hutchison and his ilk—are
speaking in similar terms. If Israel is to survive, this plan must
be rejected. How else are Israel and the decent elements in the
world to react to schemes to destroy her, except to say that the
young state must live, else all- honor is gone in international
relations? Therefore, the new injections of pious and diabolical
proposals will be respected. Israel has turned them down. Her
