Writer Backs Change,

Editor, The Jewish News:
Recently I heard Dr. Ira Eis,
enstein speak here on the sub-
ject, "A Modern Approach to
Judaism—the Reconstructionist
View.". In his 45-minute talk,
Dr. Eisenstein devoted 40 min-
utes to debunking traditional
Judaism.
. . . I must point out that Dr.
Eisenstein is not original. We
heard the same arguments from
the Anarachists three quarters,
of a century ago .. .
. . . New interpretations are
due, yes overdue. Just as dur-
ing the past centuries life and
circumstances compelled o u r
rabbis to make our laws more
strict, more rigid, so now do
life and circumstances compel
us to re-evaluate our laws in
a spirit of-liberal interpretation.
But this liberal interpretation
of the old law must be based
on the foundation of old law.
It must be accomplished within
its framework and not, as Dr.
Eisenstein advocates, through
Anarchy.
It must! be built on the old
foundation of the Pentateuch,
the prophets and the Talmud,
but the laws, customs and tra-
ditions, should be interpreted in
terms of modern life and the
needs of the conternporary Jew.
Above all, these new evalu-
ations must be done by deeply
religious men, as all great re-
ligious reformers in, all religions,
have I been. No non - believer
should be permitted a part in
it. Then, and only then, will
Judaism be revitalized, and
only then will all Jews find
themselves under its roof.

Khrushchev Says 'Nonsense'

to Reports of Anti-Semitism

LONDON, (JTA) Nikita
Khrushchev refused to discuss
reports of anti-Semitism in the

The question was raised by

easing of anti-Semitism in the
Soviet bloc states.
Khrushchev's reply was
termed "uncompromising and
