It was declared a festival in the midst of the Mourning period of "Sefi- rah.' Sefirah is generally at- tributed to the death of 24,000 disciples of . Rabbi Akiba. Tra- dition claims that the students died on only 32 days of this period. Thus the 33rd day of the count was declared' a festi- val. The term Lag b'Omer means the " 33rd (day) of the Omer" (count). Amongst - the Kabbalists this day was known as the holiday of Rabbi Simon bar Yochai. This great rabbi, a distinguished disciple of Rabbi Akiba, was sentenced to death by the Ro- mans for going to his master's defense. He and his son then fled to a cave. When the enemy was finally defeated years later, they emerged from the cave When the aged rabbi died, it was considered a happy event, since his death was not brought about by the sword of the Ro- mans, but by the hand of God. This day is therefore known as a day of victory of the word of the Lord over the sword of the tyrant. The Kabbalists go to his grave in the village of Miron in safety, to be reinspired by his great and mystic teachings. Many lights and torches are lit on this day because there is a tradition which claims that Rabbi Simon bar Yochai caused a great brilliant light to appear on the day of his death when he taught the mysterieg of Kab- balah. . .Colleague Commends New Beth Abraham' Cantor to Detroiters Friday, April 27, 1956 Detroit Jewish News-1 In a profession, the regard in which fellow practitioners hold a colleague is considered of in- estimable value.
