Israel Demands Egypt Must
Abandon Blockade of Suez

Israel's major demand upon
Secretary General- Dag
Hammarskjold, who is now on
a mission - to protect the Arab-
Israel truce, - is that Egypt
should lift the Suez Canal
blockade - against Israeli - ship-
ping, the JTA - reports.
One of the week's interesting
deVelopments was the rejec-
tion by- the.United States of a
French proposal for a tripartite
foreign ministers' meeting in
Paris, on May 4, on the Arab-
Israel issue. A- State Depart-
ment spokesman is reported by
the JTA to have said that a
side meeting on the question is
possible when NATO meets in
Paris.
It is. reported from London
that Britain is considering an
Israeli request for 40 jet fight-
er planes and 30 Centurion
tanks. France delivered 12 jet
planes to Israel last* week.
Jewish communities every-
where observed Israel's Inde-
pendence Day with mass cele-
brations. (A report of the De-
troit meeting will be found
elsewhere in this issue). In
spite of a heavy rain, many
thousands attended the . out-
door celebration in New York.
Many dignitaries addressed the
rally and the large gathering,
raising the right hands,- recited
with Rabbi Jung the 137th
Psalm', "If I forget thee, 0 Je-
rusalem . . ."
Prime Minister David Ben-
Gurion told leaders of the
United Jewish Appeal in a ca-
bled Israel Independence Day
message from Jerusalem that
"if- war should come, we shall
acquit the name of the Jewish
people with courage and hon-
or." . . -

FRANKFORT (JTA)—A large
number of Germans evidently
are "homesick" for Hitler. Re-
sults for a survey of 5,000 West
Germans, it was reported, in-
dicated that about '70 percent
of West German workers are
discontented with their present
position in society and feel they
were more highly valued under
the Nazi regime.
In Kiel, largest Baltic port in
West Germany, the Freedom
of the City has been restored
to Nazi Grand Admiral Erich
Raeder explicitly, and to Adolf
Hitler implicity. In December
1945, even before the Interna-
tional Military Tribunal in
Nuremberg sentenced Admiral
Raeder to life imprisonment for
Nazi war crimes, the Kiel City
Council unanimously resolved
to withdraw honorary citizen-
ship from Hitler and from
Raeder, the only two individuals
upon whom it had been con-
ferred during the Nazi era.
Times 'have changed since
1945, however. The -present head
of the Christian Democratic Un-
ion in the Kiel City Council is
Guenther Schubert, a good
friend of Raeder's and himself

BOULDER, Col. (JTA)—Fra-
ternities and sororities at the
University of Colorado were.
ordered to abolish discrimina-
t or y membership restrictions
based on race, color or religion
by Sept. 1, 1962 or face proba-
tion and loss of campus privi-
leges.
The decision to ban discrithi-
nation was adopted by the
Board of Regents after a day-
long meeting. Spokesmen for
the Greek letter groups said
that elimination of • discrimina-
tory restrictions would mean
that national fraternities would
be forced to quit the campus.
