The Showdown in a World Crisis

We are reaching a showdown not only such a task, the entire United Nations pro-

The many others are equally important. Each chapter is
added proof of the share of Jewry in the making of America.
Each chapter, also, has its fascinating side. For instance, there
is the story of Sampson Simson, "the first Jew to grkduate from
Columbia College and the first of his class to deliver commence-
ment oration in Hebrew." He was the first Jewish lawyer to
pass the New York bar. He was the founder of Mt. Sinai
Hospital. He was confidential clerk to Aaron Burr.
Then there is the story of the famous convert, Warder
Cresson, the 1J. S. Consul in Jerusalem who became _the champion
of Jewish rights, who married a Sephardi and remained in the
Holy Land, who disaPproved of - the "pishkes" and "Chalukah,"
who "has a place among the forerunners of Zionism for being
the first to advocate agricultural colonies far the Jews in
Palestine."
Mr. Simonhoff has written an enlightening and informative,
as well as entertaining volume. It should be read by every young
American Jew who seek; knowledge about Jewish pioneering
in this country.

Two Delightful Children's Books

Viking Press (18 E. 48th, N. Y.) has just published two new
delightful children's books.
John Oldrin's "Eight Rings on His Tail" (illustrations by
Kurt Wiese) is a fine story for young readers about a raccoon
and her babies. The author, writing in clear style that will hold
the interest of children 8 to 10, displays knowledge about animals
and is able to impart his enthusiasm to his readers.
In "Lion," William Pene dU Bois tells, in a story with pictures,
the tale of a lion he has invented. As the very young readers
share the adventures with the author, they begin to imagine
there is a lion right in their living room.
Both books will be valued as ,additions to children's libraries,
