common to our two peoples."
The Acting Mayor invited "all
our citizens, without respect to
race or creed, to join in the
celebration in harmony and
brotherhood."

Mayor George M. Algoe pro-
claimed April 13 to 20 "Israel
Independence Week" and urged
"all friends of freedom" in Flint
to help the Flint United Jewish
Appeal raise its share of a na-
tionwide $8,000,000 birthday
gift for the people of Israel's
eighth anniversary as free citi-
zens in an independent land.
Mayor Algoe noted that birth-
day contributions given to the
Flint United Jewish Appeal
would be turned over to the
nationwide United Jewish Ap-
peal for the financing of pro-
grams in Israel "to speed the
resettlement and absorpton" of
tens of thousands of refugees
streaming in from strife-torn
countries in North Africa.
The Mayor called for this
support "in view of the valiant
determination of the people of
Israel to survive in freedom, to
keep their land open as a haven
of refuge to men, women and
children from lands of darkness
and danger; to give homes and
human dignity to the oppressed
arriving on their shores, and in
full recognition of their whole-
hearted identification with the
forces- of freedom and democ-
racy in the common effort to
halt the spread of tyranny and
totalitarianism."
Dr. H. M. Golden and Joseph
Megdell, co-chairmen of the
1956 Flint United Jewish Ap-
peal, hailed the mayor's action
and termed it "a true gesture
of - American friendship which
I know represents and expresses
the sentiments of every free-
dom-minded citizen in this city."
