Rabbinical Council, Merkaz Issue
Statement on Circular Distribution

The Council of Orthodox
Rabbis and the Merkaz, in a
meeting on March 31, issued a
statement regarding distribution
of circulars accusing a local
grocer of selling non-kosher
tongues.
The Jewish News last week
reported the incident, in which
Norman Cottler, proprietor of
the Dexter-Davison Markets de-
clared that the handbills con-
tained "libelous misrepresenta-
tion about the - sale of the
tongues."
Since the incident occurred
on Erev - Pesach, no representa-
tive could be contacted from
the Council of Orthodox Rabbis
—the Vaad Harabbonim.
The joint statement of the
Vaad and Merkaz points out
that the tongues were procured
from L. Gunsberg and Sons
which handles non-kosher meat
products.
Although these tongues, the
statement continues, carried a
"plombe" (a seal showing they
came from kosher-slaughtered
animals), they had not been
washed, soaked and salted be-
fore they were pickled as re-
quired by the laws of Kashrut.
The statement charges that
Cottler was confronted with
these facts, and agreed to re-
move the "kosher" sign from
the counter. However, he re-
fused to publish a statement
explaining the incident to those
who already had purchased the
tongues.
The Council, thereupon, issued
its own statement, by circular
and announcements from con-
gregational pulpits.
Cottler, however, stated that
these circulars first made the
accusation that he was guilty of
selling questionable merchan-
dise, and then went on to say
that a thorough investigation
was being conducted to deter-
. mine who was at fault.
He said that rather than
cause a disagreement with the
Vaad, he agreed to take down
the "kosher" sign, but asked
that the rabbis make the state-
ment that it was their opinion
that the tongues were not
ritually pure, but not to accuse
him of maliciously or purpose-
fully misleading his customers.
He charged the circulars ac-
cused him of deliberately sell-

ing the tongues and were issued
before completion of any in-
vestigation.
The tongues were obtained
through a representative of the
Gunsberg firm who said that
he had two barrels of tongues
with the rabbinical "plombes."
Cottler said that was _good
enough for him to assume they
were strictly kosher.
In addition to the "plombe,"
the tongues also carried a hech-
sher from • Rabbi Menachim
Nuchem Feldman, an orthodox
rabbi, Cottler said.
The dispute centers on
whether the tongues were
washed and salted and whether
they were mixed with non-
kosher tongues at the meat
packing plant.
A Gunsberg spokesman, who
admitted the firm is not con-
sidered strictly kosher — that
it is not under- auspices of the
Vaad—said that the tongues
sent to Cottler were kept sep-
arate from others during the
pickling process.
He, said that the pickling pro-
cess itself, • which consists of
soaking the tongues in brine,
would seem to cover the neces-
sary salting of the tongues.
Cottler said that he fails to
see how the rabbis could issue
a statement that the tongues
were not washed and salted,
when they actually do not know.
He said he is still waiting for a
public apology from the Council
of Rabbis for making public
charges without proper facts.
Efforts are being made to
bring the matter up for discus-
sion before the Jewish Com-
munity Council.
Meanwhile, Cottler reported
that none of the tongues have
been returned, nor have any of
his customers complained either
that the items were not kosher
nor that they doubt his in-
tegrity.
