Lieutenant Colonel Ruth
Berman, of the Israeli Army,,
who came to Detroit to speak
at two Allied Jewish Campaign
dinners, has returned to Israel
secure in the knowledge that
her words helped make each
dinner a complete success.
Speaking first to the apparel
trades sections of mercantile
division, Col. Berman helped
prompt pledges totaling $98,-

chairman of the mercantile di-

Stamp Collector

By HENRY B. STERN

Topical, or thematic stamp
collecting, is one of the most
popular forms of the hobby. A
topical collector is not especi-
ally concerned with a stamp's
country of origin. He collects
stamps that fit into a particular
theme or subject. Here are sev-
eral topical collections that this
writer has seen: religious sub-
jects on stamps; flags on stamps;
women on stamps; stamps print-
ed only in black; stamps show-
ing bows and arrows. The list
is endlesS—apparently the in-
genuity of topical philatelists
hats no bounds.
Collectors interested in learn-
ing more about topical philately
should set aside June 15, 16 and
17, when the American Topical
AssOciation will hold its fifth
international stamp exhibiton
in Detroit at the Tuner Hotel.
The highlight of the philatelic
year will be the Fifth Interna-
tional Philatelic Exhibition
(FIPEX) to be held at the new
Coliseum in New York City,
April 28 through May 6. Exhibi-
tions of stamps from collectors
and post office departments of
over 50 countries will be shown.
The United States is issuing a
special stanmp, postal card arid
air mail envelope for the oc-
casion.
The Israeli Ministry of Posts
will exhibit philatellic material
and plans to have at least one
representative on hand to meet
collectors, answer questions, and
so forth.

Rep. Martha Griffiths

Editor, The Jewish News:
Let me take this opportunity
through your fine publication to
express my thanks and appre-
ciation to the many persons in
Detroit who have written me
regarding the tense situation in
the Middle East.
Since many of these corres-
pondents have not included
their addresses, it has been im-
possible for me to answer per-
sonally, and it is my hope,
through the medium of your
columns, to convey my appre-
ciation to these individuals.
The Arab-Israeli situation has
not improved in recent weeks,
and it is certainly incumbent
that our Government initiate
constructive action, not only to
prevent the destruction of this
democratic nation of Israel, but
also, to prevent a war in that
part of the world.
Let me compliment ybur pub-
lication on the fine job it is
doing, and let ,me thank you
for this opportunity to answer
my many friends in Detroit.

Two Jews Elected

TUNIS (JTA)—Tunisia's first
National Assembly will have
two Jewish members.' Albert
Bessis and Andre Barouch were

Principal party in the National
Front is the Neo-Destour (na-
tionalist) group, which is led
by Habib Bourguiba.

NEW YORK, (JTA) — West
Hooker, who planned to estab-
lish a "Christian Television
