$25,000 Gift Makes PossibleProject to Serve All Faiths

A minimum gift of $25,000,
announced this -week by the
Kasle Family and - the Kasle
Foundation, through Mr. and
Mrs. Abe Kasle, makes possible
the establishment of a Library
of Judaica, at Wayne University
Library.
The gift was accepted by
the Detroit Board of Educa-
tion at its meeting Tuesday
evening.
The purpose of the new li-
brary section was outlined this
week in the following state-
ment:
"Wayne University proposes
to develop a strong library col-
lection in the field of religion
with emphasis on all aspects of
the Judaic-Christian heritage
which has played a major part
in the shaping and growth • of
Western civilization and has
permeated every aspect of its
social and cultural life. The uni-
versity regards such a collection
as indispensable not only to the
study of religion per se as a
vitally important aspect of hu-
man experience, but also the

proper study of history, phil-
osophy, anthropology, sociology,
archaeology, psychology, liter-
ature, music and arts. At pres-
ent, the library facilities of the
the community in this area are
deplorably inadequate. The uni-
versity hopes to correct this
deficiency by establishing a fine
and representative library in
this entire field, and it requires
private aid to accomplish the
objective within a reasonable

period of time. Such a library
would be an important acquisi-
tion, ultimately enriching the
cultural life of the .ampu.s and
the society Of which it is a part.
"We propose to call .upon
qualiged scholars in the sev-
eral branches of religion for
assistance in the compilation
of a master list of desiderate.
Also, we hope to take advan-
tage of appropriate opportuni-
ties to acquire the collections

of . private scholars as they
come on the market. Toward
this goal, private financial
'assistance is indispensable.
"An admirable nucleus for the
proposed collection has been
offered to Wayne University.
It is an ektremely fine collec-
tion of Judaica which includes
many important works which
would be very difficult to pro-
cure by a process of gradual
accumulation..
"The Kasle Family and
Kasle Foundation, through the
efforts of Mr. and Mrs. Abe
Kasle, propose to make it
possible for the University to
acquire these items by gifts
aggregating a minimum of
$25,000 to be used toward the
acquisiition not only of selec-
tions froni the Judaica collec-
tion, but also relevant books
and journals that would form
a nucleus, known as the Kasle
Collection, that would fit into
the purpose of the University
in this respect."
In presenting the gift to
Wayne Uniirersity, Mr. Abe
Kasle stated that "too often in
the rapid growth of a commun-
ity the spiritual values which
form the basis of American de-
mocracy may be. neglected. The
Judaic-Christian heritage is the
