100 Cast for Roles in 3-Night
Hadassah Musical Revue

By the Oak-Woodser
A flyer -entitled "We're ex-
pecting our fourth" was the
unique way used by the South
Oakland County Chapter of
Hadassah to announce the
birth of its fourth annual show,
"On the Cuff."
And strictly "on the cuff" is
the fact that 100 parts have
now been' cast for this latest
musical and drathatic extrava-
ganza which will be staged for
three nights, May 6, 7 and 8
in the Mumford High School
auditorium.
Working as far back as six
months ago, writers for the
group prepared the ground
work for the casting, which
Preoccupied Hadassah direc-
tors for two nights earlier
this month, in the home of
Mrs. Robert Gutterman, 10104
Nadine, Huntington Woods.
A regular production line
was set up, with applicants,
both members and their hus-
bands, ,being greeted by Mes-
dames Mickey Mandell, Arthur
Winer, Harley Citrin and Wil-
liam Marcus while waiting to
try out for parts.
The singers, dancers and
-straight dramatic tryouts each-
were held in different rooms.
Mrs. Ernest Jay and her, ac-.
companist Mrs. Seymour
Krause listened to the vocal-
ists; Mrs. . Sharon Weinstock
subbed for choreography di-
rector Mrs. Herschel Harris
who was sidelined by the birth
of a new son; and Mrs. Ed-
ward Levine used the kitchen

to - interview candidates for
straight dramatic roles.
For two nights all three di-
rectors stayed up until the wee
hours comparing notes, making
entries and substitutions and
finally fitting the applicants
into their proper niche for the
show.
After the casting, another
committee, headed by Rita
Mendell and 'aided by Mes-
dames Herman 'Bennett, Shel-
don Freedman, Lee Goren and
Richard Mendelsohn, began
calling the accepted people, to
•let them know what their roles
were and what was the night
of their rehearsal.
Now, with all these details
out of the way, the above com-
mittee set up a roster of indi-
vidual rehearsal schedules for
the cast, including directors
and crews, on an eight-week,
six-day-a-week basis.
Because this year's per-
formance requires an un- ,
usually large number of male
roles, there was the addi-
tional problem of scheduling
rehearsals -so as not to in-
terfere too much with their
time. Rehearsals therefore
have been scheduled on dif-
ferent nights in various
homes.
Individual'rehearsals w i 1 1
continue now through a week
before the show . when all
groups will be . brought to-
gether for a series of dress re-
hearsals. And then the big
opening night.
Anybody else care to stage
a show?
