State Legislature
By Sen. Swainson to Assist Israel

Michigan State Senator John
B. Swainson (D-18th Senatorial
District) has introduced in the
Michigan State Legislature Sen-
ate Concurrent Resolution No.
23, by means of which the U.S.
Congress and Government are
urged to allow the State of Is-
rael to buy defensive arms in
the United States.
Taking note that "Communist
nations have sold munitions to
Egyp t, thus threatening the
peace of the Middle East and
the entire world," Senator
Swainson's resolution proposes

the petitioning of the Congress
of the United States "to make
arms available to the State of
Israel, and negotiate a mutual
security pact with the State of
Israel."
The resolution has been re-
ferred to the Committee on Sen-
ate Business for consideration.
Senator Swainson, a legless
veteran of the U.S. armed
forces, said: "I am prompted
by my realization that the en-
trance of -the Soviets into the
Middle East picture, through
the courtesy of Arab dictators
and Egypt, destroyed the del-
icate balance between Israel,
which is the only democracy
in the Near East, and the Arab
states."
Hyman Safran, acting presi-
dent of the Jewish Community
Council of Detroit, hailed the
intent of Senator Swainson's
resolution and expressed the
hope that the State Legislature
will pass it.

Ancient Relics

Found in Israel

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The
discovery of important arch-
aeological finds in the area of
Massada where King Herod's
Palace once stood were an
nounced by Dr. Yochanan Aha-
roni, Israeli archaeologist.
He announced that some
broken pottery and a papyrus
fragment containing inscriptions
similar to those of. the Dead Sea
Scrolls had been found. This
would place the fragments at 73
C. E., when. the Romans des-
troyed Herod's Palace, or earlier,
thus providing additional proof
of the age of the Dead Sea
Scrolls.
Among the findings at the ex-
cavations near the Dead Sea,
Aharoni reported, were: a
cave which had served as an
arms depot and that had been
burned . out, a well preserved
cave that had been used as a
food storehouse and a dry pool
and canals which had once
served as a water storage sys-
tem. The excavations are being
carried out jointly by the He-
brew University, the govern-
ment of Antiquities and the Is-
rael Exploration Society.
