Isolated, threatened by seven saber-rattling nations, Israel looks to us for comfort and assistance. . . . American Jewry is Israel's chief defender in this hour of need, when Russian arms are increasing the threat of war, in this time of serious danger for the Jews in North Africa. . . . The Israelis are maintaining their freedom by providing their own defenses in this crisis. . . . Ours is the humane duty to assist in the rescue of the North African Jews who seek havens in Israel, and to encourage the young Jewish State in its economic struggle. ... Ours also is the task of strength- ening our internal structure, by continuing sound educational and health programs for Detroit Jewry. For these purposes, the Allied Jewish Campaign opens officially next Wednesday evening at the public meeting at Temple Israel, for the regular goal of $4,150,000 and an additional $1,230,000 for the United Jewish Appeal Emergency Fund for Israel. This is a call to our community, through our Allied Jewish Campaign, to uphold the hands of the Israelis who are fighting for freedom and to retain the high standards of our community.
