- The first dormitory building on the new Mctint Carmel
campus of Technion—the Israel Institute of Technology at Haifa
—has opened and already been occupied by 102 out-of-town
students. The two-story structure combines utility with ingeni-
ous regard for comfort. A large lobby provides _sitting space
and separates the living quarters from common service facili-
ties. There is a tea kitchen and laundry in each of the house's
two wings, which are connected bY, a large social room, a patio

Why - is it customary to
flick a drop of wine from
the cup each time one of the
plagues is mentioned in the
course of the Seder Passover
_
eve?
A number of answers- are
offered for this interesting cus-
tom. Some claim that it is a
sort of graphic description and
representation of how the
Egyptians were reduced in
numbers after each successive
plague, just as the wine grows I
less in the*: cup. Others clairn. :
this is a means of expressing
to:the others around the table
that it is our wish to avert this
kind of catastrophe from hap-
pening to them.
Some writers claim that this
custom is an expression of re-
gret on the part of the observ-
ant Jew to signify that he does
not delight in the downfall of
any human, even though it be
his immortal enemy. Spilling
the wine indicates that even
the loss of an Egyptian life
was considered a loss for marv.
kind.
* * *
Why do some people insist
upon doing this with their
fingers?
The plagues that were cle-
scribed in the Bible usually
carried the description that
they were delivered by the
"finger of God." As each plague
is mentioned; therefore, one
flicks the wine with one's
fingers to signify the "finger
of God" which punished the
Egyptians.

Why is it customary to
combine the matzoh and the
bitter herbs and eat them in
the form of a sandwich?
There is a difference of opin-
ion in the Talmud (Pesakim
116a.) as to what the proced-
ure of - eating the matzoh and
the bitter herbs should be. Ac-
cording to the rabbis one is
supposed to eat the Matzoh
separately and the bitter herbs
separately, since the matzoh is
mentioned in the Bible as an
independent commandment (Ex-
odus 12:18) while the bitter
herbs are mentioned only in
connection with the Paschal
lamb (Numbers 9:11). Since
there is 116 - Paschal. • lamb
offered- today the two
should be distinguished by sep-•
arate ceremonies lest it be mis-
takenly thought that the eating
of the bitter -herbs applies
the same sense as the matzoh.
Hillel disagrees with this
viewpoint and claims that the
two should be eaten together
since at the place where the
eating of the bitter herbs is
mentioned, it 4s mentioned that
they are eaten together with
the Matzoh and this procedure
should be followed, according
to Hillel, even when • there is
no temple. The later rabbis, as
was done in many other in-
stances, wanted to obey both
concepts and so they directed
