Safran Heads Shaarey Zedek;
Table 'Enfranchisement' Resolution

Hyman Safran, a prominent
leader in the Jewish Welfare
Federation and vice-president of
the Jewish Community Council,
was elected .president of Con-
gregation. Shaarey Zedek, at the

tendance in the congregation's

In his annual report, the re=,
tiring president, Dr. Sidlow, re-
viewed the congregation's pro-
gress and called for continued
efforts to advance the spiritual
values of our community. Re-
ferring to the successful Israel
Bond drive conducted by Shaa-
rey Zedek, he_ emphasized the
concern of the synagogue in
Israel's security.
Mr. Safran, who assumes the
congregation's presidency at
services tomorrow, for the past
three years was vice-president
of Shaarey Zedek and previous
to that was treasurer.

low who served as president for
three years.
Louis Berry was elected vice-
president; Abraham Satovsky,
secretary, and Mandell L. Ber-
man,. treasurer.
Dr. Samuel Krohn, David M.
Miro, Dr.- Albert J. Altman and
Maurice Schiller wtre chosen
members of the board of trus-
tees.
By an overwhelming stand-
ing o t e, the membership
tabled a proposed amendment
to the constitution to extend
"equal duties, rights and pri-
vilges" to "both spouses." This
action resulted from fears ex-
pressed by participants in the
discussion that the amendment
as worded could be interpreted
as leading to granting "aliyot"
to women.
Rabbi Milton Arm and Can-
tor J. H. Sonenklar were re-
elected for another year.

Adas Shalom Synagogue will
conduct the entire Sabbath Hol
Hamoed service for Passover
on March 31, in the main sanctu-
ary.
Following the chanting of the
sidrah portion by Marshall
Charlip, Sheldon Kirsch, Elliot
Sigman, Jeffrey Tigay and Leon
Waldman, Robert Bachman will
chant the Haftorah. Sermonic
comments will be given by Jer-
rold Lax and Barry 'Weimar'.
Responsive reading will be
led by Samuel Johnson, Joyce
Lazar, Gail Cameron, Jill Ryna
Linden and Gail Posen, and
sermonettes will be delivered
by Jeff Tigay, Barbara Gold-
smith and Sheldon Kirsch. Don-
na Hammerstein will offer
greetings on behalf of the or r•
ganization.
Chanting the schacharis and
musaf prayers will be Marshall
Charlip, Paul Stern and Ronald
Posen. Other songs and recita-
tions will be given by Ira Har--
ris, Bess. Berman and Charlotte
Liss.
The service is being super-
vised by Rabbi Jacob E. Segal,
Cantor Nicholas Fenakel and
Rev. I: Ulrych.

Rabbi Wohlgelernter's Trip Set for April

Rabbi Max J. Wohlgernter,
whose announced departure for
Israel early this year was de-
layed at the request of the
Yeshivath Beth Yehudah, is
scheduled to leave for the Jew-
ish state April 21, aboard an
El Al Constellation,
Executive director of the
Yeshivah and spiritual leader

Detroiters elected as officers
at the recent Central Regioh
United Synagogue Youth Con-
vention here are Sandy Weiner,
vice president, and Becky MO-
sen, secretary. Jerry Zelizer, of
Columbus, 0., is president.
Leonard Baruch was adviser
of convention arrangements and
;chairmen were Arnold Kollin,
Sandy Weiner, Ronald Benson
and Ira Harris. They hosted 500
delegates from the Central Re-
gion, which is composed of teen-
agers from Ohio, Indiana, Ken-
tucky and Michigan. -
The convention adopted a res-
olution to "urge the State De-
partment to ease tensions in the
Middle East and provide arms
for Israel." They also discussed
the American-Jewish commu-
nity in terms of their assuming
leadership positions in the next
15 years.

Sigmund Jaulus w a s re-
elected president of Cong. Bnai-
Moshe at the annual meeting at
the synagogue last week.
Also elected were Benjamin
Weiss and Dr. Paul Fraiberg,
vice-presidents; Harry Kwiker,
treasurer; and Harry J. Guns-
berg and Donald Katz,. sec-
retaries.
Chosen to fill vacancies on the
synagogUe's board of directors
were Ernest- Curtis ; Mitchell
Feldman, George Gunsberg and
Melvin Weisz. All will serve
three-year terms.
The officers and directors will
be installed by Rabbi Moses
Lehrman, at services on the
