SEGAL & SONS Twenty-three immigrant families and seven single men from all parts of the globe have settled at Ramot Meir, a five-hundred-acre parcel of hole - riddled, sandy and unwatered land southeast of - Tel Aviv. Working 18 hours a day to start the settlement _three years ago, the effort paid off when last year they pro- duced 10,000 cases of oranges, grew 40 acres of quality peanuts, 20 acres of sweet potatoes and five acres of sweet potato seed- lings. Typical of the diver- sity of the settlers is 23- year-old Susan Greenberg (top photo) who holds her daughter, Lea, 3. She met and ma rried Mordechai Greenberg in Hong Kong, and they migrated to Israel in 1951. While her parents are in the field, Lea attends the village school (middle photo) . Meir Vishinsky, 29, from Buenos Aires, is in charge of Ramot Meir's 1,000 chickens. The set- tlers expect to make poul- try and eggs as important a phase of its output as its other successful products. A rehabilitation center aimed at helping mentally retarded children make an adjustment to life has recently been opened in Jerusalem. Filling a need long felt by educational and social agencies in Israel as well as the community in general, the center will provide care and education for children who can- not be accepted by ordinary schools. It is another in a net- work of institutions established in the past six years by Malben, Israel welfare p..ogram of the Joint Distribution Committee. The center will admit mental- ly retarded boys and girls of 12 to 14 and will provide not only the special schooling for them, but will also give them all types of rehabilitation services—psy- chological, educational, health and vocational. In this way re- tarded children with a limited mentality will be better pre- pared for life and equipped to make their own way in it. Initially, the new center will have room for 60 students, half of them residential and half day-time pupils.
