8-Fold Increase in
Montreal's Schools

MONTREAL, (JTA) —
The
number of Jewisl- children at-
tending Jewish .4oxy schools
here has increased aiTriost eight-
fold in a 14-year period, it was
revealed in data of the Cana-
dian Jewish Congress Research
Program. It showed a wide-
spread trend toward, new areas
Of settlement in this city.
According to the . CJC figures,
426 children attended Jewish
day schools in 1941, as against
8,694 Jewish children in at-
tendance at Protestant schools.
In 1955, when a total of 17,494
Jewish children were attending
school, 3,300 of them were en-
rolled at Jewish Day schools
and the rest attended Protestant
schools. Thus, while total Jew-
ish school population was just
short of having' doubled, the
shift to Jewish day schools
showed a prOportionately much
greater increase. The report also
made the point that while in
1941 all Jewish day schools
were in older areas of settle-
ment, 40.6 per cent of Jewish
children attending Jewish day
schools in 1955 were attending
institutions in the newer resi-
dential areas.
