The Jewish War Veterans of
the United States strongly -crit-
icized the action of the State
Department in entering into a
treaty with Saudi Arabia "un-
der which the State Depart-
ment agreed to have the De-
fense Department screen those
individual American soldiers
who were to be stationed at an
air base in Saudi Arabia."
In a statement of policy re-
leased by the National. Policy
Committee 'of the organization,
JWV pointed out that its criti-
cism was "based on the fact
that in the as s ignment of mpi- .
tary personnel to man Ameri-
can bases, the only criteria for
assignment should be the mili-
tary capabilities of the indi-
vidual."
Reubin Kaminsky, JWV na-
tional commander, cited the ac-
tion of the Defense Department
in ordering a battalion Of Ma-
rines to the Middle East as
"tangible evidence that our
'country is determined to take
the necessary steps to avert war
in that area." • He pointed out
that "such forthright action
might go a long way in convinc-
ing the Arab Nations, drunk
with the power of Soviet guns,
that the free world does not in-
tend to abandon its democratic
allies to the whimS of sinister
communist aggression."
