Behind the Scenes

A serious battle against the Montor group—known as the
American Friends of Israel—is now developing behind the scenes
. . . It may involve the Israel government and its embassy in
the United States ... The Zionist Organization of America has
decided at a closed session of its National Administrative Coun-
cil to ask the Jewish Agency and the American Zionist Council
to explore with the Israel government the "propriety" of the
Montor group . . . It also adopted a decision to ask the Israel
government to discourage the. activities planned by the Amer-
ican Friends of Israel . . . The American Zionist Committee for
Public Affairs similarly decided at a closed meeting of its ex-
ecutive committee to ask Israel Ambassador Abba Eban to dis-
courage the Montor group from going ahead . . . On the other
hand, the Montor group has presented to the Israel Ambassador
a 100-page report on a confidential survey conducted on the
effects of the present public relations activities in this country
in behalf of Israel . . . The survey, arranged by the American
Friends of Israel, was conducted by two non-Jewish experts .. .
It established that the word "Zionist" has a connotation which
is not helpful to Israel's cause in this country . . . Meanwhile,
Max Bressler, ZOA vice-•resident, has posed a number of perti-
nent questions to the American Friends of Israel . . . The ques-
tions seek to clarify whether the Montor group was established
with the consent of the Israel government and whether it was
its purpose to compete with the American Zionist Council in
stimulating American public opinion in favor of Israel . . . Other
questions seek to establish whether the Montor group wants to
supplant _the Zionist parties in this country, or replace the Jew-
ish Agency as the tie between Israel and American Jewry, or
engage in activities similar to the United Jewish . Appeal and the
Israel Bond Organization . . . The Montor group, meanwhile,
has shown no inclination to answer these questions.

The Dulles Blunder
There is a good deal of resentment among Jews in the United ten in Fisher Theatre.
States over the serious blunder which Secretary of State John
Foster Dulles committed by telling the Senate Foreign Affairs
Committee that the Prophet Mohammed was killed by a Jew
. . . One may agree or disagree with Dulles' stand on the Arab-
Israel issue, but there seems to be no excuse for a Secretary of
State to come out publicly, at a SenAte hearing, with a false
An impressive value
and inciting assertion against Jews . What is even more serious
— ideal for Passover
is the fact that Secretary Dulles—who is well known by now
for his faux pas—did not see fit to Withdraw his false and dam-
entertaining
aging statement on the spot even though his own advisers im-
mediately drew his attention to his slanderous misstatement . .
He apparently intended to impress the Senate committee with
this false assertion in order to justify his barring Jews from.
among the American troops sent to the American air base in
Saudi Arabia . . . This crude ignorance on his part, and his stub-
born-refusal to withdraw outright his false anti-Jewish state-
ment immediately, is hardly fofgiveable . . . It not only indicates
a high degree of irresponsibility by failing to check facts before
making wild assertions, but it also throws an unfavorable light
on Secretary Dulles' sense of judgment in general ... It took
him more than a week to finally establish that he was wrong.
and to withdraw the baseless assertion from the record of the
Senate committee . . . Thus he put himself in an even more
compromising position than if he had withdrawn his statement
on the spot, as urged by his State Department advisers . . . The
Arabs must have a _hearty laugh at Mr. Dulles' expense when
they read his libelous "explanation" given to a Senate body as
"historical background" for the present Arab-Jewish relations
. . . As for the Jews—all that can be said is, that even the
American Council for. Judaism, which usually finds itself in
wide agreement with Mr. Dulles, cannot feel comfortable with
his "explanation."
