Purely Commentary

Garland Evans Hopkins, executive vice-president of the
American FriendS of the Middle East, is the new devil on the
troubled scenes. of the Middle East. He is not satisfied with his
pro-Arab stand: in his clever (too clever?) way, he now is con-
ducting a one-man campaign against American Jewry.
In his accusations against "pressures" to . prevent his deliv-
ering an anti-Israel address in Detroit, he resorted to diabolical
cleverness: he contended that the Israel and Arab sides had
been heard and that now is the time to hear the American side.
He apparently • is unconcerned with the human element: and the
human element is the American element. We wonder whether
men and women who are bent upon destroying a people can
possibly understand that side!
Dr. Max Lerner, in a column in the New York Post, accused
Hopkins of "playing the Goebbels line." Hopkins didn't like it, and
he immediately made use of the opportunity to get into print (as
he did with his Detroit accusations). That's what the devils—
the American Friends of the Middle East, the (anti- and un-
American) Council for Judaism and their like—seek: a public
platform. Hopkins wrote to the New York Post and Lerner
replied. This exchange of views deserves attention. We quote it
from the Post:

This exchange tells only half the story. The full story will
reveal how Arabs are aligned with anti-Semites; how their
supporters, backed by the oil interests, are encouraging a move-
ment to destroy Israel; how, in order to accomplish their geno-
cidal scheme, they are pursuing a path of harming not only
Israel but Israel's kinsmen: American Jewry. (See "Cross-Cur-
rents," the ADL book by Forster and Epstein, published by
Doubleday).
It is tough fighting such elements—especially when they
tell you, as William Hocking did in a letter to the New York
Herald-Tribune, that Israel's defenders are placing their interest
in a foreign state prior to the interest of this country. But
there are the human elements that are overlooked by all these
people, and the human element is not dead in this country.
In the January issue of the American Journal of Economics
and Sociology, under the heading "Vigilance Is the Condition of
Liberty," we came across the following, over the signature of
Don Paarlberg, of Washington:
THE PRICE OF FREEDOM? "The condition upon which
God hath given Liberty to man is eternal vigilance." So said
John Philpot Curran, Irish statesman and patriot in his "Speech
-
Upon, the Right of Election," 165 years ago.
"It is the common fate of- the indolent to see their rights
become a prey to the active," said Curran. If a man relaxes
his vigilance, "servitude is at once the consequence of his crime
and the punishment of his. guilt."
Somerset Maugham, one of the great writers of this
century, wrote these words: "If a nation values anything more
than freedom, it will lose its freedom; and the irony of it is
that if it is comfort or money that it values more, it will lose
that too." - -

Hopkins: Diabolical Anti-
Israeli ... Max Lerner, exposes
his 'Crafty Propaganda.'

By Philip
Slomovitz

The freedom spoken of here applies to the universe, not to
a Hocking and a Hopkins alone, for their own personal benefits.
The eradication of distances in the world, the interest that our
country has in the Middle East, the threats that come from the
East to the West, seriously involving the Middle East, impose
upon all of us grave responsibilities for peace. The sparks are
flying in the area surrounding Israel, and the Thompsons and
the Hockings and the Hopkins, aided by the oil interests and the
Arabs, are fanning these flames. Yet Mr. Hocking would delude
people into believing that he, the spreader of a new hate, is the
true American; when, in reality, anyone who spreads hate is
himself responsible for the undermining of amity among Ameri-
cans and among peoples who now are on friendly terms with
America.
This is a showdown. It took a war against Hitler to relegate
the haters—the anti-Semites, the anti-Catholics, the anti-Negroes,
the anti-humanity elements—to the background. They are emerg-
ing again; on the shoulders of anti-Israelis who are perched on
oil barrels. But those who would not relax vigilance, who reject
servitude for others because they will not tolerate imposition
of it upon themselves, will fight to a finish against the re-emerg-
ence of bigotry in this great country, or anywhere on earth.
That is why the fight goes on to a finish. We aim, with all
libertarians, to keep Israel free and secure, so that the entire
Mediterranean area should be free from attack; so that dangers
of war should be eliminated. Eventually, the Hopkins and the
Hockings must view these, also, as good words to remember!

Among the Subversive Organizations

Detroit's Better Business Bureau has issued a circular listing
the 288 organizations that have been designated as subversive
by the Attorney General of the United States. Included in the
list are: American Jewish Labor Council, Jewish Culture Society,
Jewish People's Committee, School of Jewish Studies, New York
City; Yiddisher Kultur Farband and United Committee of Jewish
Societies and Landsmanschaft Federations, also known as Coordi-
nation Committee of Jewish Landsmanschaften and Fraternal
Organizations.
What the list does not indicate—because its collectors prob-
ably are unaware of it, is that this list of six Jewish groups in
reality is a single movement, composed of a very small number
of people, functioning under a variety of names. Tha't always
has been a policy of fellow-travelers: to use many names
wherewith to mislead people into believing that they are more
than they really are.

Notable Marriages

Marriages, according to Jewish traditions, are made in
Heaven, but their announcements belong on the society pages.
But when distinguished names are involved, they deserve better
than the routine attention. When Louis Golding weds, when a
daughter of Baron de Gunzbourg is joined in wedlock, the an-
nouncements assume more than ordinary significance. Therefore
we share with our. readers these two notices from the Chronicler's
column "Incidentally" in the London Jewish Chronicle:
"Only four people, besides the bride and bridegroom and the
officiating minister, were present at the wedding, at Hampstead
Synagogue, of Isaiah Berlin, C.B.E. of All Souls College, Oxford,
and Mme. Aline Halban. The four were Mrs. Murie Berlin (his
mother), and aunt, and the two witnesses: Mr. Elath, the Israeli
Ambassador in London, and Lord Rothschild; the minister was the
Rev. I. Levy, O.B.E., S.C.F. Mr. Berlin, 46, is a distinguished figure
not only in Oxford (where he is University Lecturer in Philoso-
phy) and London, but also in the U.S.A., where he recently com-
pleted a further series of lectures at universities. His bride is
the daughter of Baroness de Gunzbourg, of Paris, and the late
Baron Pierre de Gunzbourg, who was a leading French indus-
trialist.
"Another marriage, also of a communal figure who has dis-
tinguished himself in the world at large, will shortly take place:
that of Mr. Louis Golding, the novelist, to a child-hood friend
from Manchester, Mrs. Annie Wintrobe. They intend to celebrate
the occasion with four parties: one, after the civil ceremony, for
London friends at the Cafe Royal; the second: a "mitzvah" party,
at the Home of the Jewish Blind in Manchester; the third at the
"Convention Rooms" of Mr. Golding's famous novel, "Magnolia
Street" (actually the. Assembly Rooms in Cheetham); and the
fourth, in New York, where there will also be a religious wedding
under the chuppah."

Deny Building Sports Field
On Site of Ghetto Cemetery

MUNICH, (JTA) — The War-
saw Yiddish newspaper "Folks-
shtimme" has denied reports
that a soccer field will be built
on the site where martyrs of
the Ghetto are buried, accord-
ing to a Yiddish-language War-
saw radio broadcast. The broad-
cast was beamed to North
America.
According to the broadcast,
the newspaper reported that a
sports association had requested
permission to build a soccer
field on a part of the site where
there are no graves. The request
the newspaper said, was con-
sidered at a meeting of the
Praesidium of the W a r s a w
People's Council, with the parti-
cipation of Jewish leaders, and
it was decided not to grant per-
mission to use any part of the
site, "even in the neighborhood
of the place where the mur-
dered Jews, Poles and Soviet
citizens are buried." Further-
more, the report asserted, it was
decided that a memorial to "the
victims of Hitlerism" should be
erected on the field.

New Oil Strike

Made in Israel

TEL AVIV (ITA) — Oil
was struck at another well
at Heletz last Friday after-
noon. The new strike was
made when drilling had
reached a depth of about
4,990 feet. Initial reports in-
dicated that the gusher had
reached a height of about 55
feet.
The strike appears to be
much more promising than
the first oil strike in Israel
last September. Dr. Tchop,
Swiss chief geologist, h a s
upped his estimates of the
oil reserve in the Heletz area
from 3.7 million barrels per
square kilometer to seven
million barrels.
Other oil- geologists in Is-
rael have also upped their
estimate of reserves in the
whole productive h o r i z on
from the previous 30 million
barrels.

Review Arabian
Boycott of Jews

NEW YORK, (JTA)—Chargee
that Saudi Arabia had set up a
system under which export con-
cerns in the United States must
certify as to whether they are
"Jewish" or "Christian" were
aired here at the monthly forum
of the Foreign Credit Inter-
change Bureau. The bureau's
members include major banking
and commercial firms. The
meeting heard that the certifi-
cation procedure was being
verified by checks made here
by the Saudi Arabian Consulate.
A bureau member, who was
not identified, in accordance
with rules of the trade graup
designed to elicit the fullest
exchange of trade and credit
experience, said that Saudi
Arabian customers had advised
him that certification was neces-
sary, and that lack of a certifi-
cate attesting that the supplier
firm is not "Jewish," would
make it impossible to complete
a sale. He complained that the
criteria for determining "Jew-
ishness" were unknown, adding
that compliance without a pro-
test could not be made in any
event.
The information offered at the
meeting apparently confirmed
the extension of the Saudi Arab-
ian boycott of Israel to Jews
in general. The U. S. Depart-
ment of Commerce has stated
in the past that it does not rec-
ognize the Arab League boy-
cott of Israeli firms and firms
doing business with Israel. Par-
ticipants in the discussion said
that while the certification pro-
cedure was new, traders have
become increasingly aware of
the tightening of the boycott.
