Goiter's Visit for the City of Hope
Brings $10,000 Gift from Detroiter

Samuel H. Goiter, the roving
ambassador of the famous City
of Hope Center in California,
swarmed like a mother hen over
his brood of five affiliate or-
ganizations in Detroit last week,
as he came here to "greet the
stock-holders in the great hu-
manitarian enterprise that is
the City of Hope."
The climax of Goiter's five-
day visit here came at a 'meet-
ing of the Businessmen's Group
last Thursday evening, in the
Belcrest Hotel. At that time,
Goiter, the executive vice-presi-
dent of the City of Hope, re-
ceived a $10,000 check from Col.
David Saffir, who had just
joined the Businessmen's Group.
Representatives of the other
affiliates of the City of Hope—
the Auxiliary, Cancer Fighters,
Mr. and Mrs. Club and Duar-
tians—were invited to witness
the presentation.
Col. Saffir (the title is an
honorary one), who just turned
80 in December, gave the sum
in memory of his late wife, who
passed away Oct. 28, 1954, after
the couple had been married
for 55 years.
The Colonel became inter-
ested in the City of Hope after
reading Goiter's much-publi-

cized book, ". . . And They
Called It the City of Hope,"
published a little over a year
ago by G. P. Putnam's Sons.
His introduction to the book
was through Mrs._Sally Kessler,
a member of the Detroit Aux-
iliary, the oldest local affiliate
of the California institution.
Enthralled with the story of
service to humanity, as ex-
pressed by Goiter in the book,
Col. Saffir wrote to the author,
and there followed an exchange
of correspondence which led to
their meeting and the subse-
quent gift, one of the largest
ever given to City of Hope in
this city.
In a brief speech which ac-
companied the check, Col. Saf-
fir compared Goiter's work with
the efforts of Moses, except that
while Moses did not live to see
the fulfillment of his work,
Goiter is seeing ever-growing
testimony to his efforts.
Goiter said that it was the
work of such men as Col. Saf-
fir's generation that has given
continuity to the cultural prog-
ress of the Jewish people for 35
centuries. This progress he
characterized as the "antibiotic
for a sick humanity."
Eugene Epstein, Business-
men's Group president who pre-
sided at the meeting, reported
that $35,000 has been sent this
year by the organization. A
check for $2,000 was presented
to Goiter by Mrs. Kessler for
the Auxiliary.
Earlier in the week, Goiter
met at a major meeting with
the Cancer Fighters, and also
with the other affiliates. Syl-
via Newlander, the new Mid-
western representative of the
City of Hope, was introduced
at the various meetings_
Another highlight of the
Thursday meeting was the
award by : Goiter to Robert
Adell, representing the Adell
family, of a statuette in recog-
nition of the family's contribu-
tion of an ambulance to the
institution.
The City of Hope treats and
does research on tuberculosis,
cancer, heart disease, leukemia
and Hotchkin's Disease.
