that Judaism, too, - must not be-

He characterized the distinct-

and warned that the growing

to Jewry's survival.
Earlier, Dr. Perilman had

Hear Report on U.S.
Housing Problems

"Changing neighborhoods are
a national phenomenon," stated
Mrs. .Erances Levenson, .execu-
tive -director of the National

dommittee Against Discrimina-
tion in ' Housing, who spoke on

Monday night before organiza-
tional representatives at the
Jewish Community Council's
Delegate Assembly.
Mrs. Levenson charged that
it is the responsibility of the
Jewish community, not neces-
sarily to stop this change, but
to move, for valid reasons—not
out of panic, but because of
real need, such as deteriorating
neighborhoods or new necessi-
ties for the family.
She warned that a decline• in
the value of many neighbor-
hoods is due to the panic of-
the older residents in placing
"for sale" signs on their prop-
erty, and not caused by the in-
flux of new residents.
Mrs. Levenson pointed out
that the general trend of
change in the Jewish commun-
ities across the nation is from
the city to the suburbs and
from the East to the West (that
is, the East Coast to the West
Coast).
Commenting on the Middle
East situation, Samuel J.
Rhodes, Council president, ask-
ed "How is it proper to con-
demn the Communists for send-
ing arms to. Egypt when our
State Department ships arms to
Saudi. Arabia while withhold-
ing them from .Israel?_'
Reports were given also by
Benjamin Weil, of the subur-
ban committee; Rabbi Leon
Fram, on the Emergency Con-
ference in Washington; and
Boris Joffe, executive director
of the Council.
