Luncheon of the Women's Di-
vision of the American Jew-
ish Congress, at Rainbow Ter-
race, Wednesday.
The Rt. Rev. William B.
Sperry, of Christ Church, the
unanimous choice of the
awards committee .for this
year's honors, was presented
with 'a plaque signifying the
distinction for which he was
chosen.
Mrs. Allan L. Weston presided
. at the luncheon and the award
was presented by Rabbi Jaco,b
E. Segal. The judges' decision
was announced by Mrs. Alex-
ander Sanders, in the absence
of the chairman, Bishop Rich-
ard Emrich.
Rev. Sperry, in his address
accepting the award, spoke of
the importance of the occa-
sion, held during Brotherhood
Week and on Washington's
Birthday; of the human obli-
gations of citizens to give "to
bigotry no sanction," in the
words of George Washington;
to support the FEPC program
and to ,fight against discrim-
ination in all areas, for equal
rights for Negroes and for
vigilance against such mani-
festitations of prejudice as in
the 'Till Case.
Mr. Sperry, who was in
Israel and in the Arab countries
two years ago, said, in refer-
ence to the Middle East situa-
tion:
"On the foreign scene I think
we need, to be vigilant about
the Near East, which it has been
my privilege to visit. I am con-
cerned about forty million
Arabs, so many of whom dwell

Rabbi Ahron Opher, president
of the Chicago Council of the
American JeWish Congress, the
afternoon's guest speaker, in an
address on "American Jewish
Congress Meets the Day's Is-
sues," told of the extensive Con-
gress program for just rights at
home and abroad and took oc-
casion to deplore the arming
of Arab states • at Israel's ex-
pense and the .failure of this
country to provide the Jewish
State with defensive arms.
Participants in the program
included also Rabbi Leon Fram,
president of the Michigan AJ
Congress Council, and Mrs.
William Burk, 'President of the
Congress Women's Division.

To Honor Late

Detroit's cantors will raise
their voices in song and prayer_
at the annual Cantorial, Con-
cert, to be held at 8 p.m., Wed-
nesday, in the new sanctuary
of Cong. Ahavas Achim, 19190
Schaefer.
The special program will fea-
ture a service in memory of
the late Cantor Mendel Stawis,
who, prior to a lengthy illness
which preceded his death early
this year, served at Ahavas
Achim.
Dan Frohman will conduct
the evening's program, which
will include selections by the
choirs of Cong. Shaarey Zedek
and Adas Shalom Synagogue.
Rabbi Jacob Chinitz will offer
memorial prayers and tributes
to Cantor Stawis.
Participating in the program
will be Cantors Hyman Adler,
Ruben Boyarsky, Nicholas
Fenakel, Judah Goldring, An-
ton Rosenfeld, Jacob Sonenklar
and Jacob Tambor.

The Lawton-Levy paper, dis-
tributed by the Journal of the
American Chemical Society, is
entitled "Sodium Fluoborate as
a Fluorinating Agent."
In a statement on the* result
of their work, Lawton and
Levy were quoted in Chemical
and Engineering News: "This
is believed to be the first re-
ported use of sodium fluoborate
as a direct fluorinating agent
without the intervening prepa-
ration of a diazonium salt."

On his 50th birthday, today, he
is being acclaimed by his
friends for his many communal
services.
A practicing attorney ' with
offices in the National Bank
Building, Mr. May is a consult-
ant for the Ford Motor Co.
From 1929 to 1931 he was an
FBI Special Agent under John
Bugas. He then becanFie. an As-
sistant United States Attorney,
holding that post from 1931 to
1933.
From 1942 to 1945 he was
Chief Investigator for the In-
telligence Section of the U. S.
Army. Since 1952, he is chair-.
man of the Detroit Loyalty In-
vestigating Committee.
He is a member of the na-
tional board of directors of the
National Conference of Chris-
tians and Jews and serves on
the national finance committee
of the Anti-Defamation League
of Bnai Brith. He is affiliated
with the Masons, Probus and
Standard Clubs and Franklin
Hills Country Club and the
Former FBI Association.
Born in Washington, D. C.,
Feb. 24, 1906, son of Isadore
and Mina (David) May, he re-
ceived his B. A. .at the Uni-
versity of Maryland and his
LL. B. from National Univer-
sity.
He was married Nov. 28, 1928,
to the former Sylvia Sheer.
They have two children, Nancy
and Alan. Their home is at
18318 Oak Drive.
Having traveled widely, Mr.
May, together with Mrs. May,
visited the Orient and Eu-
ropean countries. They recent-
ly returned from a trip to Ja-
pan.
Mr. May has visited Israel
twice and has succeeded in en-
listing support for the coun-
try's economic projects. He is
president of the Rock Products
Corporation, a company of De-
troit investors in Israel.

"triphenylfluorosilane has been
obtained in fair yield by treat-
ing triphenylchlorosilane with
sodium fluoborate in acetone
solution."
This' development is the re-
sult of the work of Emil A.
Lawton, son of Mr. and Mrs. I.
Lawton, of Detroit. He had the
cooperation, in the preparation
of his paper, of Arthur Levy.
Lawton and Levy are associated
with Battelle Memorial Insti-
tute, Columbus, 0.

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Be ersheb a; the economic
center of Israel's Negev, was
linked directly by rail with
Tel Aviv,. Haifa and Jeru-
salem when the last section
of a 48-mile spur was com-
pleted.
The first freight train will
roll on the new section this
week.
The new line, which took
three years and 11 million
pounds to build, connects up
with the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv
line at Naan, seven miles
south of the Lydda junction.
The new spur will be used
chiefly to bring min e r a 1
products out of the Negev
which are now being trans-
ported in economically ex-
pensive trucking operations.
