JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The
arraignment of Dr. Rudolf
Kastner on charges of perjury
was interrupted when his at-
torney told the court that he
had asked for Israel Supreme
Court for an injunction post-
poning the hearing pending the
arrival from abroad of two
witnesses for the defense.
The pre siding magistrate
halted the hearing to await a
decision by the Supreme Court.
The request for an order nisi
was filed with the high cuort
after the magistrate turned
down a defense request for a
month's postponement of the
hearing pending the arrival of
the two witnesses. On Monday,
the magistrate also rejected a
request by the plaintiff for a
delay so that he could bring
a witness frdm Germany.

H. Heine's Anniversary Marked
By Harvard's Display of His Works

To commemorate Heinrich
Heine, the great German lyric
poet who died 100 years ago
this Friday, Harvard Univer-
sity is showing major parts of
its collection of Heine's works
—the largest Heine collection in
America and one of the most
important in the world.
The display shows, for the
first time on exhibition, many
of the books, manuscripts and
letters of .Heine given to Har-
vard in 1935 by the late Carl
M. Loeb, New York financier,
who died last year. The ex-
hibition in t h e Houghton
Library will continue for six
weeks.
Included in the display is the
first edition of every volume,
poetry or prose, which Heine
published during his lifetime,
some 35 titles in all. There are

Bertha Kling; who apart from being my sister-in-law is also
a fine poetess, suggests in one of her poems that men abdicate
world leadership and turn it over instead to the women of the
world who, she says, would open alluring kitchens on the high-
ways and byways of the world, feeding the poor, healing the
sick and consoling the rejected. It is doubtful that the masculine
BERNARD KATZEN, Special
rulers of the world will heed Bertha's advice. But in view of
the mess the world finds itself in, it might perhaps be advisable Consultant of the United States
Department of State and a
to try an approach that would place mercy above the mercenary
sponsor of the America-Israel
in human re).ations.
Stuttering in Israel is the most prevalent of all speech dis-
orders, but psychic disturbances as a result of speech disorders
are less common in Israel than abroad. This rather interesting
item is culled from the most recent issue of the Hebrew Medical
Journal where the Israeli medic J. Zylkewicz discloses that the
percentage of stutterers in Israel is much higher than else-
where because of th postwar immigration of people who experi-
ienced tragedy and distress. •

every stage of this poet's writ-
ing career—first as a young
law student in Germany, last as
expatriate journalist in Paris,
where he spent the final 20
years of his life.
Among the rare items are the
first publication in which any
of Heine's writings appeared;
his first book of poems; the
manuscript of his last poem;
letters illuminating the con-
troversies, political and literary,
with which his life was filled;
portraits and prints; one of
four known casts of the poet's
death mask.
Mr. Loeb obtained the major
portion of Harvard's Heine col-
lection from Salli Kirschstein, a
German collector. This Berliner
spent his life tracking down the
books, portraits, anthologies,
letters, the variety of materials
bearing on Heine's life and
works-1000 items in all. After
Kirschstein's death in 1935, Mr.
Loeb purchased and presented
this collection to Harvard. It
ranks today as the outstanding
collection on this continent, and
one of the finest in the world.
Had it remained in Ger-
many, the collection would al-
most certainly have been split
up. The Nazis soon proscribed
Heine's works, as non-Aryan.
Those poems which were too
familiar to be obliterated
from the national conscious-
ness were reprinted in anthol-
ogies as "author unknown."
