During the past few years, as
the suburban community of
South Oakland County has con-
tinued to expand, we have
watched with interest the di-
rection of events based on the
goodwill of residents toward
their fellow participants in the
human race.
We watched with mixed re-
actions the greetings extended
to an Oriental f a m i l y that
moved into our neighborhood,
and we listened to an unusual
amount of back fence gossip on
what certain people believed
would happen to the neighbor-
hood.
In all fairness to a majority
of the residents, most were un-
concerned about the physical
differences of the new family,
only about the qualities that
make for a good neighbor.
A few, however, had to be
convinced. In the weeks and
months that passed, a strange
thing began to happen — it
was strange at least to the
neighborhood doubting Toms.
Instead of being the pariahs
among the residents, they took
a place of leadership. The par-
ents became active in PTA, and
the children constantly played
host to the other kids. To those
Who were at first concerned,
friendship long ago has re-
placed animosity.
Education, both on a level
of institutional learning and on
the very basic level of intimate
contact, has gone a long way
toward reducing friction, dis-
trust and misunderstanding on
religious and racial grounds.
Yet, th rough Brotherhood.
Week, we call attention to cer-
tain tendencies we all have: to

forget what we have learned
and to prejudge people solely
because we KNOW they are
different or hold different
views than ourselves. -
One day we will reach the
stage when we will not just
tolerate an Oriental family,
or any family, and wait con-
descendingly to see w hat
happens. Some day, we will
say simply, "we have a new
neighbor, I hope he's a good
Joe."
Some time, we hope soon,
acceptance of all peoples will
not merely be toleration. When
that day comes—when we have
Brotherhood the year round—
we no longer will have the need
for a special Brotherhood
Week.
