Scholars Reveal Contents
Of Last Dead Sea Scrolls

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The
contents of the last of the seven
Dead Sea scrolls, heretofore
known as the "Book of
Lamech," was made public here
at a press conference by Dr.
Yigal Yadin, noted archaeolo-
gist, and Dr. Benjamin Mazar,
president of the Hebrew Uni 7
versity, which acquired the
ancient scroll last year through
the generosity of S. D. Gottes-
man, an American Jewish phil-
anthropist, •and with the aid of

Dr. - Isaac Rabinowitz
Differs With Zeitlin

More than 15a- people lis-
tened to Dr.'Isaac Rabinowitz's
second lecture on the Dead Sea
Scrolls from an adjoining hall,
over loud speakers, after the
lecture hall ih the Art Institute
was filled to overflowing Mon-
day evening.
Dr. Rabinowitz differed dras-
tically with those who maintain
that the Strolls belong to the
6th or 7th century rather than
to antiquity. He especially dis-
puted the claim of Dr. Solomon .
Zeitlin who has assailed the
contentions that the Scrolls be-
long to the pre-Christian era.
Most of his lecture on Mon-
day was devoted to reading
translated excerpts from the
Discipline, Habakkuk, Visita-
tions, and other fragments, as
well as from the "War of Sons
of Light With Sons of Dark-
ness" Scroll.
Dr. Rabinowitz laid emphasis
on his 'conviction that the
Scrolls belong to - the- era pre-
ceding 70 C. E. He summarized
the first four columns of the
Visitations Scroll- and empha-
sized that the date of composi-
tion is -determined from the
contents.
"The Qumran text belongs
not later than to the year 70,
and any date after that is im-
possible," he deClared, in spite
of the views "even of the
astute Dr. Zeitlin," Dr. Rabino-
witz said. "The MediNral date
is utterly out of the queetion,"
he added, disputing Zeitlin,
Weisz, Driver and others, but
without touching upon the ar-
guments of the latter.
,Dr. Rabinowitz laid stress
in his lecture upon the escha-
tological fulfilment preached in
the Scrolls from which he had
quoted. He announced that - he
will deal in his next and final
lecture with the significance of
the Scrolls on the history of
Judaism and Christianity.

Soviet Complaint on Middle East Rejected by U. S -

WASHINGTON The State
Department made known that
the United States and its allies
do not intend to allow a Soviet
veto in the United Nations Se-
curity Council to block western
action to protect or restore
Arab-Israel peace.
The State Department views
Russia's statement as an effort
to create 'world public_ opinion
against any action in the Arab-
Israel dispute except through
the Security Council, where
Russia has veto power.
The State Department spokes-
man, Lincoln White, said Tues-
day the United States wanted
to work through the UN if it
possibly could, "but," he said,
"should the United Nations be-
come paralyzed, as it has in the
past, .due to Soviet action then
there" is no alternative to work-
ing outside the„United Nations."
U. S. officials said the United
States has no intention of rush-
ing armed forces to the Arab-
Israel area Instead, it was said
the U. S. is concentrating on
diplomatic efforts to obtain an
Arab-Israel compromise settle-
ment. The U. S. also is seeking,
jointly with England and
France, to find immediate and
long-term' measures to deter ag-
'gression by either side.
These officials made it plain
that the U. S. will not allow
itself to be restricted by a Rus-
sian Security Council veto if

1950 Declaration
Defended by Eden

LONDON—Prime Minister Sir
Anthony Eden, replying to a
number. of queries by Labor
MPs on the Soviet statement
-blasting the Tripartite.,Declara-
tion signatories for going out-
side the United Nations in deal-
ing with the Israel-Arab conflict,
told Commons that "the Dec-
laration of 1950 is fully in har-
mony with terms of the United
Nations Charter. In fact," Sir
Anthony continued, "I have
never hitherto heard anyone
casting any doubt on that fact
at all." -
Asked by- Labor Party lead-
er Hugh Gaitskell whether the
British government would make
an official reply to the Soviet
statement, Sir Anthony said:
"I . would certainly consider
that, but I have not yet had an
opportunity of consulting the
Foreign Secretary 'in detail on
the matter."
Emanuel Shinwell, member
of the former Labor Cabinet,
criticized the Prime Minister's
statement on the Middle East
situation as less clear than it
might have been, and asked
whether it was the intention
of the three western powers
to prepare action only in the
event of hostilities—after the
act—or whether they were also
consider-ing positive action to
prevent trouble. In reply, Sir
Anthony refused to go beyond
stating that in reference to the
Tripartite Declaration, "Y o u
know well what our position is,
remains, has been, will be—
that we will carry out the
terms of the 1950 Declaration."
He also indicated that the con-
clusion reached at the current
tripartite discussion in' Wash-
ington would not _be made
public.

with military forces to prevent
War. Russia's statement on the-
Arab-Israel controversy is con-
sidered particularly hypocritical
because Russia helped create
the present crisis by providing
munitions to Egypt.
The Soviet statement de-
scribed the recent Eisenhower-
Eden declaration on the Middle
East situation" as "a -unilateral
measure undertaken without the
United Nations and .without the
participation of Middle Eastern
countries." The Washington dec-
laration, Moscow claimed, "can-
not but create a_threat to peace
and security in the Middle East
and also cannot but violate the
independence • and sovereignty
of countries in this area."
It added that "the Soviet
Union will defend the freedom,
independence and principle of
non-interference in the internal
affairs of countries of the
Middle and Wear East. Together
with other interested govern-
ments, it will support the se-
curity of this area." -
The Moscow statement noted
that the Washington declaration
said specifically that the signers

Thent of the controversy be-
tween Israel and her Arab
neighbors. "That would be fine
if it were so. But in that case,
why are these decisions taken
without the participation of in-
terested nations, behind their
backs?" Moscow asked sarcas-
tically.
