the peace of the Middle East: Detroit rabbis have issued a
call to the Jewish community of Detroit to observe this
Sabbath, at services on Feb. 10 and 11. "as a special day
of prayer for peacerin the Middle East." The rabbis' state-
ment, signed by Dr. Leon Fram (Temple Israel. Reform),
Rabbi Israel Halnern (Cons. Beth Abraham, Orthodox)
and Rabbi Moses Lehrman (Cong. Bnai Moshe, Conserva-
tive). reads:
"The mounting tensions in the beleaguered Middle
East threaten the well-being, not alone of Israel and the
Arab states, but also that of America and the democracies
throughout the world.
"We, the undersigned, representing the three branches
of the Jewish faith, call upon our co-religionists in Metro-
politan Detroit to observe the • Sabbath of February 10th
and 11th as a snecial solemn occasion for praying for peace
in the Middle East.
"We of the free world must be gravely concerned w;th
,
the total danger to our security which inheres in the
Middle East crisis. Let us gather together in our respective
houses of worship to pray for lasting peace and enduring
hope for the safety of all mankind."
The proclamation of this Sabbath as a day of supplica-
tion for peace was decided upon unanimously by repre-
sentatives of nearly 150 local organizations who met in
an emergency meeting, at .the new Labor Zionist Institute
on Schaeffer, on Feb. 1, on call from the Joint Committee
of the Jewish Community Council -and the Zionist Council.
Speakers at the emergency meeting, at which Irving
W. Schlussel, president of the *Zionist Council, presided,
included Rabbi Fram, Philip Slomovitz,. Boris Joffe,
Samuel Rhodes and representatives of many local organ-
izations.
The conference • also framed a special appeal to Secre-
tary of State Dulles to assist Israel with defensive arms
and to exert the influence of the State Department to effect
peace between Israel and the Arab states.
