Kefauver Sparks Congressional
Appeal for U. S. Aid to Israel

WASHINGTON — (JTA) —
Strong criticism of Anglo-Am-
erican policy in the Middle
East was voiced by Senators
Estes Kefauver, Herbert Leh-
man and Paul Douglas. Speak-
ing on the Senate floor, the
three Democratic Senators
charged that the present policy
of allaying Arab resentment en-
couraged the Arab states to
perpetrate anti-Israel and anti-
Western feelings.
Sen. Kefauver criticized the
policy of the State Department
as one of "open pursuit of the.
Arab world at Israel's expense."
He said that although Secretary
of State Dulles professes to be
impartial to all Middle East
countries, the policy of "friendly
impartiality came to an end in
1952." The Eden proposal to use
the 1947 UN partition plan as
a basis for Arab-Israel settle-
ment would amount to an Israel
"territorial hara-kifi," he stated.
Sen. Douglas said that Eden's
November "peace" proposal

would encourage the Arabs "to
take all of Israel or greater
amounts of Israel with the next
bite." He compared the pos-
sible concessions under the
Eden plan with Czechoslovakia's
experience in 1938 and 1950.
Senator Lehman concurred
with Senators K_ efauver and
Douglas in a request that Israel
be allowed to buy arms at once
to defend herself and that the
U. S. sign security guarantees
with Israel and any Arab nation
willing to meet the conditions.
The Senators were joined by
a number of Representatives,
many of whom also coupled
their criticism of current pol-
icy with pleas that Israel be
granted the defensive arms she
has requested and that a formal
security treaty be offered to
her and any Arab states which
renounce aggression.
The Big Three conference on
the Middle East was in session
this week to map a program to
ease tensions.

Schultz, ADL's national chair-
man, reported to complaint
received by the League from
a New ,York manufacturer-
exporter who was advised by
a prospective customer in
Baghdad that no business
could be transacted if the New
York firm is "Jewish.")
Mrs. Shulman rejected "as
contrary to the best American
tradition of full and open de-
bate of all major issues" the sug-
gestion that the major political
parties enter into a "gentle-
man's agreement" to exclude the
Mid-East crisis from public de-
bate in the forthcoming national
election campaign. She declared
that the 300,000 women of Ha-
dassah are keenlr interested in
all important domestic and
foreign issues and will demand
of candidates for elected office
a full explanation of their
views, whether it be on eco-
nomic prosperity or civil rights
at home, or foregn aid,' unifi-
cation of Germany or the
Middle East problem.
Expansion of Hadassah's com-
prehensive medical program in
Israel to meet future conting-
encies also was voted at the

Hadassah Demands Action on Arab
Boycott of Firms Employing Jews

NEW YORK, (JTA) — Estab-
lishment of , a bi-partisan corn-
mision to study the effect of
Arab States' boycott against
American firms dealing with
Israel and against firms having
Jewish directors or Jewish em-
ployees was requested at the
four-day Hadassah national con-
ference attended by delegates
from 48 states representing
300,000 members.
Mrs. Rebecca Shulman, presi-
dent of the organization, voiced
this request in her presidential
address. She charged that Saudi
Arabia was "especially flagrant
in prosecuting and Arab League
'campaign against American
firms that practice the American
doctrine of equality in selecting
personnel." She said that ship-
ping companies and exporters
having business relationships
with Israel were the principal
targets of the Arab boycott.

by Saudi Arabia against Jew-
