Set 10 Allied Drive February Rallies

• Chairmen John E. Lurie and
Max M. Fisher report 10 meet-
ings sets .so far for February
to get the 1956 Allied Jewish
Campaign under way in all divi-
sions. An across - the - board
leadership conference is set up
for Feb. 19.
Sunday brunches are set for
Feb. 12—in the mercantile divi-
sion for the furniture section at
the Furniture Club, and in the
services division for the linen
and laundry suppliers employees
at Lachar's.

Largest Rabbinical Convocation
The largest rabbinical ordi-
nation convocation in Jewish
history will be held at Yeshiva
University, March 4, when 120
rabbis, graduates of its Rabbi
Isaac E 1 c h a n a n Theological
Seminary, will receive "Semi-
cha," the highest degree in
Jewish theological learning, it
was announced by Dr. Samuel
Belkin, president.

The Bnai Brith section of
the metropolitan 'division is
making plans to distribute kits
to workers on Feb. 27 and 29.
The Junior Division will hold
its initial pre-campaign fund-
raising- affair on Feb. 26.

Israel to Welcome
45,000 New Settlers

Center Davison Branch
Offers 3 New Courses

A drawing and painting class
for adults is one of three new
courses being offered by the
Jewish Community Center. The
course, which is held' from 8
to 10 p.m., each Wednesday, in
the Davison Center, runs for
10 weeks. Gerald M. _Tenen-
baum .is the instructor.
Social ballroom dance classes
for juniors,. 9 to 12, have be-
gun, and are held at 4 p.m.,
each Thursday, at the Davison
Branch. Juniors will learn the
fox trot, waltz, rhumba, tango,
mambo and cha cha during
the 10-session course. '
Registrations are being ac-
cepted also for a junior tap
dance class of 10 sessions, open
to boys and girls 5 to 9. The
course, taught at the Davison
Center, also teaches personality
and song routines.

JERUSALEI41 — The Jewish
Agency executive, in plenar3r
session Monday night, approv-
ed the 1956-57 budget of 157,t-
125,000 pounds, including an
increase of 13 million pounds
asked by Dr. Giora Josephthal,
Agency treasurer, to replace
funds originally expected from
the Israel government for im-
migrant housing. The budget is
expected- to insure reception of
45,000 immigrants this year. .
The executive also approved
a proposal to guarantee a 10,-
000,000 pound bond issue to be
floated by the Keren Hayesod,
flnancial arm of the Agency.
Bonds would bear 61/2 per cent
interest and would be repaid
within eight years at a rate
tied to either the Israel cost
of living ind6c or the dollar
rate.
Finance Minister Levi Eshkol
laid estimates for a 900,000,000.
pound budget for 1956-57 be-
fore the Israel Cabinet Mon-
day. In addition, Mr. Eshko'l
proposed imposition of a' spe-
cial tax to raise a 50,000,000
pound defense 'fund, and Con-
tinuation of the campaign to.

representatives of various
groups in world Jewry,. be held
immediately after the World
Zionist Congress which is to
take place here at the end of
April, was made by Dr. Nahum
Goldmann, chairman of the
Jewish Agency_ executive, at
the executive's plenary session.
Dr. Goldmann also suggested
that the forthcoming Zionist
Congress should meet for 10
days, three of which should. be
devoted to Israel's political and
security situation and the seven
others to current Zionist af-
fairs and reorganizational prob-
lems. Joseph Sprinzak, Speaker
of the Israel Parliament and
member of the Jewish Agency
executive, suggested that the
Zionist Congress should last
five days only,
