Simon Cohen to Direct
Detroiters Establish Fund to Aid
JPS's Bible Translation Revision
Detroit again leads the way
in setting a pattern for a great
cultural undertaking. .
Stemming from an effort- in-
augurated here during annual
Jewish Book Month, a group of
Detroiters, under the leadership
of Leonard Simons, undertook
to establish a fund to assist the
project for the revision of the
translation of the Bible, under
LEONARD N. SIMONS
the sponsorship of the Jewish
Publication Society of America.
This week, Mr. Simons re-
ported that 100 Detroiters al-
ready joined in this project,
with pledges of $25 a year each
for a period of six years. Mr.
Simons said that the Detroit
goal is a minimum of 120 such
subscribers. He expressed • the
hope that this number will be
enrolled before the end of Feb-
ruary.

lation.
Edwin Wolf II, president of
the Jewish Publication Society,
calling this a "once-in-lifetime"
project, explained the Society's
plans as folloWs:
"For over a generation, the
Jews : of the English-speaking
world have been grateful to the
Jewish Publication Society of
America for its translation of
the Bible. This translation has
until . now represented Bible
scholarship at its best and the
JewiSh spirit at its finest.
"The time has come to revise
this translation in line with the
latest scholarship and with cur-
rent English usage. • Only thus
can the Bible continue to be a
living book and a constant
source of inspiration.
"It will be an arduous and ex-
pensive undertaking, but it is a
task that has to be assumed if
we are to remain true to our
responsibility. Our self-respect
as Jews demands it. We owe it
to our heritage and to the world
of faith and spirit.
"In the belief that the Bible
is the heritage of the entire
Jewish community, the Jewish
Publication Society does not
want to limit participation in
this sacred work of revision to
a few men of wealth, but pre-
fers to extend the privilege to
all Jews who may seek to share
in it. -
"This, therefore, is a call to
you to subscribe twenty-five
dollars per year for six years,
until the task is completed and
the revised translation is pub-
lished. It is part of our plan,
that, upon publication,' a special
presentation copy will be sent
to each subscriber. This will be
a token of your interest in
transmitting the word of God to
. future generations."

Dr. Rene Rochon, dean of

the establishment of a 90-day
loan fund.
The fund was started with a
$700 contribution by Levinson
to a youth who needed the
-money for tuition. The student
had the' ability to pay, but the
