Sir Anthony's offer at Guild-

come to nothing. Perhaps if
it were renewed jointly with
the United States it might be
less suspect. The hope of a

better beginning than prema-

Speaking before the Women's
National Democratic Club 'in
Washington, Monday, Ambas-
sador Eban appealed to Presi-
dent Eisenhower and Prime
Minister Eden to "rise to the
level of their inescapable moral
duty" to make it possible for
Israel to have arms for self-de-
fense.
While it is becoming increas-
ingly evident that, unless the
issue is solved in advance, it
will be impossible to keep the
Arab-Israel problem out of po-
litical discussions this year,
Arab propagandists are increas-
ing their activities in an effort
to embarrass Israel's friends and
to hurl accusations at American
Jewry in relation to their "pres-
sures" as voters. Reference to
the U. S. "election year and to
Zionist "pressure and intimida-
tion" is contained in a state-
ment addressed to the President
and to Prime Minister Eden by
Dr. Izzat -Tannous, director of
the Palestine Arab Refugee Of-
fice, who stated that "the Is-
raelis have begun to fear Arab

growing strength which might,
one day, be able to give back
to the original inhabitants their
homes and lands."
In his speech in Washington
on Monday, Ambassador Eban
declared "there cannot be a
more eccentric idea than the
suggestion that little Israel still
further expand," and he thus
gave the answer to charges of
Israel's imperalist designs. At
the same time he said Israel- will
not surrender its sovereign ten;
ritory.

Minister Eden arrived in this

Record Campaign Collections

With cash payments on 1955 pledges to the Allied Jewish
campaign setting a record, Joseph Holtzman presents a check
for $500,000 to Sol Luckman, UJA national cash chairman,
leaving less than $250,000 owing on Detroit's $2,043,854 alloca-
tion for 1955 to the United Jewish Appeal. Holtzman is a
national chairman of the UJA and is campaigning hard in
Detroit and around the country for extra funds for the UJA
$25,000,000 Special Fund. He has promised that the Holtzman-.
Silverman gift for 1956 will be $102,000, with the $50,000 increase
going toward Detroit's $1,230,000 share in the UJA Special
Fund and the $52,000—a renewal of last year's gift—going into
the regular Allied Jewish Campaign. Advance payments to the
1956 Allied Jewish. Campaign are reported nearly twice the
amount they were last year at this time. A complete financial
report will be presented at the Jewish Welfare Federation's
annual meeting Tuesday. Of the total pledged in 1955, 76.3%
or $3,139,819 has been paid. On 1954 pledges, collections are
92.4% complete.
