Editor, The Jewish News:
I was very much interested
in the protest of Mrs. Yehudi
Menuhin, which she addressed
to the "Jerusalem Post" and
which you reprinted in your
before last issue.
It was in connection with the
high duties, which the Israeli
government has imposed - on
unsolicited parcels. Those are
being sent, certainly not to be
traded or sold, but for the
sole purpose to alleviate the
hardships of needy people,
many of the regrettaby
enough, still in maabarot.
For the past few years some
of my friends and I have sent
clothing, food, vitamins and
medicines to people in dire
need of all these things. Late-
ly these destitute people wrote
us and complained about the
high duties, which they can not
afford to pay, since many of
them have no income whatso-
ever.
Some years ago I attended
a meeting of the House For
eign Relations Committee in
Washington, at which the Mar-
shall Plan aid was debated. I
have never forgotten the testi-
mony, which the President of
SKF (among the leading roller
bearings companies in the
country) gave.
He stressed the importance
of the continuation of the Mar-
shall aid, having just returned
from abroad and witnessed its
necessity. However, he very
emphatically pleaded that
Americans should send indivi-
dual packages to needy people
since it would be most valu-
able for their morale.
I strongly believe that gift
parcels sent to Israel do lift
the morale of the recipients
and their families, beside pro-
viding them with the much
needed food and clothing. My
friends and I have letters often
which stressed the fact that the
mere thought of having some-
one, friend or stranger, far
away, thinking and caring for
them, did lift their spirits and
gave them the additional
strength to endure hardships
and to hope for better days to
come.
I sincerely hope that. the Is-
raeli government will recognize
the urgency of our protests and
will abolish the unnecessary
taxes, at least for the time be-
ing.
