tism, M. Poujade answered af-
firmatively, but insisted that
raising the entire issue only
created anti-Semitism. He de-
nied that he and his movement
were racist, but admitted that
officials in his movement had
to be able to trace their French
ancestry back at least three
generations.
Dr. Jacob Kaplan, the Grand
Rabbi of France, said here that
he had never received either a
letter • or visit from Poujade,
French rightist leader, who had
asserted that he had answered
to Rabbi Kaplan on charges
that the Poujadist movement
was anti-Semitic.
"In any case," Rabbi Kaplan
declared, "more than any letter
or eventual private conversa-
tion, it is to the words and acts
of the directors of a movement
that one must refer in order
to be. able to say whether such
movement is of anti-Semitic
tendency."
Critics of the Poujadist move-
ment assert that a large ma-
jority of the movement's candi-
dates in the recent French na-
tional • elections were former
fascists.
A protest against Poujade's
anti-Semitism 'was sounded by
Jean J. Kaufmann, a leader in
the Poujade UDCA party, who
resigned to emphasize his ob-
jections to the movement lead-
er's prejudices.
