London Cantor to Chant Services
At Beth Abraham on Jan. 27

Cantor Louis Klein, of Duke's
Place Synagogue, London, Eng-
land, will chant sabbath serv-
ices at Cong. Beth Abraham at
5:30 p.m., Jan. 27, and 8:30 p.m.,
Jan. 28.
Cantor Klein, a special guest
of the congregation, is on a visit
to Detroit where he is staying
with his sister and brother-in-
law, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Fruch-
ter. He will be assisted at serv-
ices by a quartet, directed by
Harry Siegel.
Harry Greenbaum, acting
president of the congregation,
states that the public is invited
at no charge.

ship campaign, as the interior
of the new synagogue at W. 7
Mile and Greenlawn nears
completion.

Club president.
The campaign will begin with
a workers' kickoff breakfast at
10 a.m., Sunday, in the social

designated as the Louis and

dent for the last 15 years and
the Sisterhood president, who,
before retiring in September,
had headed that body for 11
years.
The campaign goal of 100 new
families is expected to be
achieved by March 26, the first
night of Passover.

Israel Night Scheduled

Shaarey Zedek's United Syna-
gogue Youth will hold an Israel
Night program at 8 p.m., Wed-
nesday, in the synagogue social
hall. The play, "Our Land,"
introduced by the group at the
national USY convention, will
be presented, by the original
cast.
Moshe Dworkin, who recently
returned from Israel, will be
guest speaker, and reports will
be given by convention dele-
gates. Israeli dancing and a
social hour will follow. Young
people, 14 to 17, are invited. to
attend.

Blind Arab Student Wins
Judah Magnes Scholarship

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The
first Judah L. Magnes Scholar-
ship awarded by the Hebrew
University has gone to a Haifa-
born blind Arab student. He is
Fereed Haj, an English and phi-
losophy major who plans to
teach at the institute for the
blind. The scholarship of 180
pounds a year honors the late
president of Hebrew University.

Hebrew Schools Open
New Term on Jan. 30

Registration for all eight
branches of the United Hebrew
Schools and its affiliate school,
the Sholem Aleichem Institute,
is currently taking place for
the spring semester which be-
gins Jan. 30.
A statement from the schools
calls ,attention to the fact that
children who have reached their
eighth birthdays should now be
enrolled. Registration will be
closed when classes begin.
A fleet of 14 buses is pro-
vided by the Schools for chil-
dren living a considerable dis-
tance from the closest branch.
The curriculum of the United
Hebrew Schools highlights He-
brew, prayers, siddur,
customs and ceremonies and
holiday celebrations. Boys are
prepared for Bar Mitzvah at
no extra charge.

Rabbi Spector was revered as
one of the great rabbis of the

Russia to Print
Prayer Books

In a late bulletin from
Moscow, a New York Times
correspondent reports that
the first Jewish prayer book
published in Russia since the
Bolshevik revolution will be
printed in Moscow next
month.
The volume in Hebrew
with explanatory references
in Russian will include pray-
ers for daily and sabbath
services and abridged ver-
sions of the services for Pass-
over, Yom Kippur, Rosh Ha-
shanah and other holidays.
It will be printed, the re-
port added, in several thou-
sand copies by a government
publishing plans for distri-
bution through the Soviet
Union. Financing is entirely
by voluntary• subscriptions of
Russian Jewry.
