Initiate Own Probes of Bias

NEW YORK (JTA) — A pro-
posal that the State Commission
Against Discrimination should
initiate its own investigations of
bias in employment, possibly on
an industry-wide basis where
conditions indicate discrimina-
tion, was made by Charles
Abrams, new chairman of the
commission, who spoke at the
Workmen's Circle Division of
the Jewish Labor Committee.

Are Now Open for Travel
The State Department recent-
ly announced that the regula-
tion restricting United States
citizens from travelling to Ro-
mania, Czechoslovakia, Hun-
gary, and Poland, has been
lifted and passports are again
issued for travel in these coun-
tries.
In addition to a valid pass-
port, it is necessary to secure
a visa for the country or coun-
tries to be visited and applica-
tions can be secured from Jules
Doneson, Israel Tourist Service,
11820 Dexter.
It takes from one to two
months to obtain the visitors'
visa, and applicants are urged
to have a valid passport in
their possession before applying
for the visa. Mr. Doneson has
announced that his office is pre-
pared to assist all passengers in
obtaining their U.S. passports,
and visas to visit Soviet Rus-
sion, Romania, Czechoslovakia,
Hungary, and Poland, without
charge.
Interested persons may apply
daily from 2 to 5 p.m. except
Saturdays. Evening and Sun-
day appointments may be made
by calling TO 8-8765 or TO
8-6896.
No distinction is made be-
tween a tourist and a passenger
visiting relatives.

Jewry Honors 80th Birthday of Dr. Konrad Adenauer

BONN (JTA)—Two ancient
silver coins—one from the time
of Bar Kochba and the other
a silver shekel dating to the
first uprising against the Ro-
mans—were presented here to
Chancellor Konrad Adenauer
on behalf of Dr. Nahum Gold-
mann in his capacity as chair-
man of the Conference on
Jewish Material Claims Against
Germany. The presentation was
made in honor of Dr. Ade-
nauer's 80th birthday.
Dr. F. E. Shinnar, head of
the Israel Purchasing Mission,
who presented Dr. Goldmann's
gift to the German Chancellor,
also greeted Dr. Adenauer on

Detroiters to Office

Election of officers for 1956
was announced by Phi Lambda
Kappa, national medical frater-
nity, with 16 undergraduate
chapters and 20 very active
alumni clubs across the nation.
Dr. Isadore B. Silber, Cleve-
land, was named chairman of
the board.
Dr. John Freedman, Detroit,
is the out-going president. Dr.
Joseph S. Poticha, Chicago,
was named president-elect and
will become president in 1957,
the 50th anniversary year of
the fraternity.
Thirteen new vice-presidents
include Drs. Joseph A.
Schwartzberg and Israel Z.
Silvarman, of Detroit.
New undergraduate trustee
is Murray L. Janower, Omic-
ron Chapter, Wayne University
School of Medicine.

its second annual games party

ed president of the Turover
Aid Society at its annual elec-
tion of officers meeting recent-
ly. Voted into office with him

ing Grant and I. Gliner, secre-

Elected Eugenics President

NEW YORK, (JTA) — Dr.
Harry L. Shapiro, chairman of
the anthropology department of
the American Museum of Nat-
ural History, has been elected
president of the American Eu-
genics Society.

Dr. Shinnar was received in
a special audience by the Ger-
man Chancellor. Earlier, he had
been among the diplomats who
called to congratulate Dr. Ade-
nauer. The _ special audience
granted Dr. Shinnar, the prin-
cipal Israeli official in this
country, caused considerable
comment here, in view of Dr.
Adenauer's crowded schedule
in connection with the two-day
celebration of his birthday.
